  * DEAN'S LECTURE: IN THE COMPANY OF SCHOLARS / (10-23-2007 4:00
PM)/
The Graduate School's first "In the Company of Scholars" lecture for
the 2007-2008 academic year will be given by Paul Freedman, the
Chester D. Tripp Professor of History.  Professor Freedman's talk,
"Cuisine: Medieval and Modern," will take place at 4:00 PM on
Tuesday, October 23 in HGS 119.  A reception will follow in the
McDougal Center Common Room. All are welcome.

Come to the McDougal Center for a night of Sushi Making and Sake
Tasting on October 25th from 8-10pm.  We?ve brought back this wildly
popular event where for just $10 you can learn to make sushi and
learn what to look for in a good sake while mingling with your fellow
grad students.  Get your tickets fast as a limited number are
available from HGS room 123.

Come see the Yale Repertory Theater's production of TROUBLE IN MIND
and enjoy a pre-show discussion starting at 7PM. Refreshments

We invite families to celebrate Halloween Harry Potter style in
Hogwarts (the transformed McDougal Common Room at HGS). Come in
costume ready to eat yummy foods, carve pumpkins, and make fun
crafts.  All children must be accompanied by an adult.  FREE to all
grad students, postdocs, and others in the Yale community and their
children. Small donation for pumpkins to carve goes to a local
charity.

Join us for a night out at Toad?s Place as we bring you tickets to
see the Tragically Hip.  Tickets are $22.50 and can be purchased at

  * SUSAN'S KIDS AND FAMILY TIP OF THE WEEK
The Essex Steam Train and Riverboat has a number of special events
for all you steam train riders!  The first up is the Day out With
Thomas, which runs November 3-4, and November 10-11.  Thomas the Tank
Engine comes to the Valley Railroad for a day of rides, games,
entertainment, and fun for the whole family. Thomas is sure he can
pull the Valley Railroad coaches...so be sure to be on board!  Next
up is the Santa Special, which runs from November 23 ? December 23. 
Winter is a special time to ride the rails and it extra special with
Mr. and Mrs. Claus...direct from the North Pole! We're decking the
halls to get you into the holiday spirit.  The last up is the North
Pole Express from November 23 ? December 23.  A nighttime steam train
ride with live readings of Christmas stories, sing alongs, and holiday
surprises. Special guest Santa Claus has a treat for one and all. Lots

redefining the boundaries of journalism and the media. Considering
this, how does one obtain a balanced viewpoint? What sources are
?trustworthy??  And how free is the ?free press? given the rising
influence of outside pressure groups? Join members of the press and
others at the International Center for discussion.

  * YALE POLICE DEPARTMENT OPEN HOUSE / (10-25-2007 5:00 PM)/

  * CREATING BIBLIOGRAPHIES WITH REFWORKS  / (10-26-2007 3:00- 4:30
PM)/
Session to be held in SML Electronic Classroom, Room 609 (Bring your
Yale ID) RefWorks is a Web-based program that allows you to organize
your research and easily create bibliographies while writing a paper.
Using RefWorks you can save references from research databases, add
notes, insert citations into a document, and format a bibliography
for that document. Best of all, RefWorks is available for free to the
Yale community! Register at the Sterling Library Reference Desk or by
e-mail to smlref at yale.edu.  The next session of this will be on
Friday, November 16, 3:00-4:30pm.

  * GPSCY HALLOWEEN PARTY / (10-27-2007 8:00 PM)/
GPSCY does Halloween - literally the biggest party of the year. Free
Miller/drink specials/two dance floors/costume contests/free
food/candy/decorations.  This event has to be seen to be believed.

HGS salsa series!  Classes are Monday evenings from 7-8:30 on 10.29,

  * GRAD NIGHT @ THE BEINECKE: ITALIAN FESTIVAL BOOKS / (11-01-2007

Come celebrate the artistic richness of Italian Festival Books with a
talk by Dr. Angela Capodivacca followed by a light reception and a
trip to the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library to view the
current exhibition.  The talk and reception will begin at 5:30 pm
behind the screen in the McDougal Center Common Room, HGS. At 6:30 pm
we will walk to the Beinecke to view the exhibit.  Free but RSVP if

bibliographies? The popular EndNote bibliography manager is now
available in a Web version that is available for free to Yale
affiliates. EndNote Web allows you to store and manage references,
import citations from online databases and create a bibliography

  * MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL @ GPSCY  / (11-05-2007 8:30 PM)/
Join us for Monday Night Football at GPSCY as the Baltimore Ravens
take on Pittsburgh!!  All this with free food, specialty drinks, and
a giant PLASMA TV!  There is no better way to watch Football, so you
might as well be there to see it...

  * FINANCIAL PLANNING FOR GRADUATE SCHOOL AND BEYOND... /

They say "start investing early," but they never tell you how.  So

  * CLUB & ACTIVITY FUNDING
Want funding for your group?  Go to

fill it out on behalf of your student group, and email it to funding
chairwoman Seanne Hanke (seanne.hanke at yale.edu).  The committee meets
every other Thursday before GPSS meetings.  To be considered for the
next meeting (November 1), submit by October 30.

  * PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT TRAVEL FUND 
Want to go to a conference?  Perform in a competition?  Present a
paper?  If it'll help your career, GPSS PDTF can help (up to a max of
$500). GSAS students must apply to GSA before applying to the GPSS
version of the CTF. Read the application, fill out the application,
and turn it in ON OR BEFORE November 15.  See the website for

  * SHOWCASE CINEMAS/BOWTIE CINEMAS MOVIE DISCOUNT TICKETS
The McDougal Center is now proud to start offering movie theater
discount tickets. You can purchase Showcase Cinemas discount tickets
for $7.00 (regular about $10) good for all times (with some theater
exceptions). We now also have BowTie Cinemas discount tickets for
$6.75 (this is the Criterion).  All tickets can be purchased at the
McDougal Center Box Office during normal box office hours.

  * PARTICIPATE IN NUTRITION STUDY
Yale Researchers Looking for healthy Asian or Caucasian males and
females for a 6 week study on Nutrition and Osteoporosis conducted
through the Yale Center for Clinical Investigations.  Will provide
food and reimbursement of $600. Diet consists of moderate and high
normal levels of protein. Participants must be: 18-45 years of age;
Non-smoker;Average weight for height;Not on birth control or
medications interfering with bone metabolism; willing to stop any
vitamin/mineral supplements or strenuous exercise (i.e. marathon
training) for the duration of the study. Please email:
