  * GSA CONFERENCE TRAVEL FUND ANNOUNCEMENT AND DEADLINE  /

The GSA Conference Travel Fund (CTF) aims to support the professional
development of graduate students by providing financial assistance to
present papers and posters at conferences on a competitive basis. 
Only students in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences are
eligible.  Applications for the Fall 2007 cycle will be accepted
until Oct. 15, 2007. More information can be found at

This week's concert features music for harp by Handel and Faure
performed by YSM harpist Joy Yeh, Solo guitar music by YSM Guitarists
Rupert Boyd and Dave Veslocki, a comic reading by Erich Greene
(Psychology), And singer/songwriter Miqdad Mohammed (Management).

Free!  Learn what New Haven's best known fall art event is all about!
 Join fellow grad & prof students at ArtSpace for a tour of the main
exhibit, an introduction to CWOS, and candid conversation about what
this means to local artists.  Speakers include ArtSpace curators and

  * PHD TO UNIVERSITY ADMINISTRATION: A PANEL ON AN ALTERNATE CAREER

Thinking about career options once you've got that PhD in hand?
Interested in staying in the academy but working in administration
rather than as faculty? Come listen to four panelists who have chosen
a career in university administration discuss their experiences and
answer questions regarding their process.  Thursday, October 18th 6-8

The New Haven Symphony is offering specially upgraded seats to Yale
Grad Students for this week's concert, available for $10 exclusively

NHSO performs Faure's Pelleas et Melisande, Durufle's Sicilienne
(World Premiere), Poulenc's Organ Concerto, and Durufle's Requiem
with YSM stars Laura Atkinson (Mezzosoprano), Jason Steigerwalt
(Baritone) and the Yale Camerata. Woolsey Hall.  Get your tickets

This Friday, the fabulous Yale Philharmonia returns to Woolsey. Come
and be moved by Anton Bruckner's powerful 4th Symphony and Samuel

MCDOUGAL FELLOWS' TIPS OF THE WEEK

  * COURTNEY'S ARTS AND CULTURE TIP OF THE WEEK
On Saturday, October 20 at 2:00 pm, the Yale Center for British Arts
will be screening Director Ted Bafaloukas's film Rockers which
showcases several popular Jamaican reggae artists and explores the
reggae culture at its peak. This great film, a part of the YCBA's Art
and Emancipation in Jamaica exhibit, is not to be missed.  This event
is free but seating is limited.  For more information, contact the

  * GINA AND PATRICIA'S PUBLIC SERVICE TIP OF THE WEEK
If you're interested in learning about other cultures or in
explaining American culture to international students, contact Yale's
Office of International Students and Scholars.  They match
international students with local "hosts" who meet periodically
throughout the year to touch base.  Also, if you're English-fluent or
want to improve your English skills, you can be matched with a
conversation partner for a four week, one hour a week conversation

The Yale Cabaret is celebrating its 40th Anniversary season with a
series of experimental plays-- fantastic theater with dinner and

  * SUSAN'S KIDS AND FAMILY TIP OF THE WEEK
The Ansonia Nature & Reserve Center has all sorts of fun things to do
this month. In addition to their weekly Creature Features, Saturdays
at noon, and the Guided Ranger Hikes, Sunday at 1:00 pm, the Ansonia
Nature Center has two fun family events next weekend and is a
twenty-five minute drive from the McDougal Center.  On October 20th
from 1 ? 5 pm there is ?Autumnfest with the Friends.?  Take a ride
over hill and dale in our hay wagon! Hear haunting tales! Get lost in
our hay maze! Learn all about bats, spiders, and owls of the Nature
Center. Enjoy fresh-squeezed apple cider and fresh-made donuts,
just-popped popcorn and crisp apples with the Friends.  Call for

2 ? 4 pm, members of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra and Ranger

As a part of the Yale Collection of American Literature Reading
Series, Charles Bernstein (a poet, critic, editor, teacher, and one
of the most prominent members of the Language Poets) delivers a
poetry reading at the Beinecke Rare Books and Manuscript Library.

The New Haven Theater Company presents the Funny Stages, an evening
of spontaneous theater, at BAR.  This month's program includes
"America's Next Great American Superhero for America" (an improvised
reality show in which the audience creates and challenges the next
generation of superheroes), "Musical! The Improv" (rather
self-explanatory), and "This Just In: You Choose the News, We Make It

  * CREATING BIBLIOGRAPHIES WITH ENDNOTE / (10-19-2007 3:00 - 4:30
PM)/
Sessions to be held in SML Electronic Classroom, Room 609 (Bring your
Yale ID) Friday, October 19, 3:00-4:30 pm The EndNote software program
helps you to organize your research and easily create bibliographies
while writing a paper. Using EndNote you can save references from
research databases, add notes, insert citations into a document, and
format a bibliography for that document. Register at the Sterling

  * SAFE BOATING COURSE / (10-20-2007 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM)/
The NH Parks Outdoor Adventure Program will host a combination Safe
Boating and Personal Watercraft course. Upon passing this course,
participants will receive a Certificate of Personal Watercraft
Operation (CPWO), which will allow them to legally operate any
recreational vessel, including a personal watercraft (jetski). Course
taught by the Boating Division of the Department of Environmental
Protection. Barnard Nature Center, Corner of Route 34 and Ella T.
Grasso Blvd. (entrance from route 34) Although this is a 10 hours
long course, we will run it in eight hours, from 9:00AM to 5:00PM.
Please bring lunch, snacks, and beverages. Space is limited to 20

Tasting on October 25th from 8-10pm.  We?ve brought back this wildly
popular event where for just $10 you can learn to make sushi and
learn what to look for in a good sake while mingling with your fellow
grad students.  Get your tickets fast as a limited number are
available from HGS room 123.

  * FLU SHOTS, COLD CLINIC AND COAT CLOSET/COAT DRIVE / (10-25-2007 
)/
Come for a free flu shot (2-4pm) and some tips on how to stay healthy
and thrive in the middle of a New England winter (4pm). Immediately
following the informational session, the Coat Closet will open, where
you can select gently used winter coats and other winter apparel.

  * MSA RAMADAN FOOD DRIVE
During the month of Ramadan, a time of fasting and charity, the
Muslin Students Association at Yale is sponsoring a food drive to
benefit the local New Haven community. Please donate non-perishable
items and canned goods. All proceeds will go to the Downtown Evening
Soup Kitchen (D.E.S.K.) on Temple Street. Donations can be dropped
off at the following locations: McDougal Center, HGS Room
123,;International Center, 421 Temple Street; Sterling Chemistry
(lobby near the main office); 320 York Street; Medical School
(Marigold's Cafeteria); School of Public Health, 47 College Street;

The McDougal Center is now proud to start offering movie theater
discount tickets. You can purchase Showcase Cinemas discount tickets
for $7.00 (regular about $10) good for all times (with some theater
exceptions). We now also have BowTie Cinemas discount tickets for
$6.75 (this is the Criterion).  All tickets can be purchased at the
McDougal Center Box Office during normal box office hours.
