Join us in HGS 119, McDougal Center, 320 York Street, for our monthly
meeting for graduate students who are raising or expecting children. 
This month, we have two special guest speakers from the Yale Child
Study Center who will share information and insights about child
development. Mothers, Fathers, Spouses, Partners, Expectant or
Prospective Parents, grad students, post-docs...and their children

  * GRAD NIGHT'S JAZZ NIGHT W/JOSHUA REDMAN / (10-12-2007 8:00 PM)/
World-renowned jazz saxaphonist Joshua Redman performs with his trio
here on campus this Friday, October 12th.  Pre-concert wine/cheese
reception for ticketholders (21+ to drink) at 7PM in the McDougal
Common Room.  Concert at 8.  Discounted Grad Night tickets are sold
out, but you can still get regular student tickets for $15 by
visiting the Sprague Hall Box Office (corner of College and Wall) or

  * INTERNATIONAL PICNIC @ EAST ROCK PARK  / (10-13-2007 11:30 AM -

Come out and join us for a little food and lots of fun at East Rock
park.  Meet and interact with students from around the globe while
enjoying some of the beautiful fall colors.  Practice your frisbee

  * VOLUNTEER AT THE ERECTOR SQUARE OPEN STUDIOS / (10-13-2007 1:00 -
4:00 PM)/
The Open Studios at Erector Square provide an opportunity for the
community to visit the personal studios of about 100 of New Haven's
best artists. We are going to volunteer at the event, greeting
visitors and answering their questions. We will also have some free
time to explore the studios and talk to the artists. If you like art
and want to do some public service, this event is for you. We will
meet at the front entrance to HGS (320 York St.) promptly at 1 pm and
then take a shuttle bus over to the studios. Transportation is free
for volunteers. Spaces are limited, so reserve your spot today by
emailing mcdougal.center at yale.edu!

  * SOCCER NIGHT AND YOUTH DAY AT THE STADIUM / (10-13-2007 5:30 PM)/
Yale vs.Cornell.  Grad students and kids welcome! Special Youth Day
entitles children to giveaways, raffles and face painting. Dinner,
courtesy of the McDougal Center provided beforehand.  Meet at the
McDougal Commons at 5:30.  RSVP by 12:00 noon on Friday to

  * GSA CONFERENCE TRAVEL FUND ANNOUNCEMENT AND DEADLINE /
(10-15-2007  )/
The GSA Conference Travel Fund (CTF) aims to support the professional
development of graduate students by providing financial assistance to
present papers and posters at conferences on a competitive basis. 
Only students in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences are
eligible.  Applications for the Fall 2007 cycle will be accepted
until Oct. 15, 2007. More information can be found at

  * SUSAN'S KIDS AND FAMILY TIP OF THE WEEK
Flu season is here!  The virus is highly contagious and is spread by
coughing or sneezing.  Pregnant women and children between 6 months
and five years are among the high risk groups and should be
vaccinated. Moreover, the elderly are more likely to become infected
from children; therefore, immunizing your child can prevent deaths in
the elderly. All people, no matter how healthy are at some risk for
severe influenza infections.  If your child is afraid of needles, the
FluMist vaccine is recommended for children over age 5 and does not
require a shot.

and current corps members.  Free food and drinks!

  * PREMIUM BEER TASTING AT THE GPSCY / (10-12-2007 7:00 PM)/
Come sample elegant Belgian and Belgian-style tripels, dubbels, and
strong ales and learn about these classic styles of beer. 7pm Friday

  * SOCIAL DANCE IN HARKNESS LOUNGE @ THE YALE SCHOOL OF MEDICINE /

Waltz. The dance will have an emphasis on waltz with a variety of
other ballroom dances mixed in to keep things interesting. For those

 Organized by ArtSpace, this event lasts several weeks and brings CT
artists to New Haven.  Join fellow grad & prof students at ArtSpace
for a tour of the main exhibit, an introduction to CWOS, and candid
conversation about what this means to local artists.  Speakers
include ArtSpace curators and area artists.   Light reception

  * PHD TO UNIVERSITY ADMINISTRATION: A PANEL ON AN ALTERNATE CAREER

Thinking about career options once you've got that PhD in hand?
Interested in staying in the academy but working in administration
rather than as faculty? Come listen to four panelists who have chosen
a career in university administration discuss their experiences and
answer questions regarding their process.  Thursday, October 18th 6-8

  * CREATING BIBLIOGRAPHIES WITH ENDNOTE / (10-19-2007 3:00 - 4:30
PM)/
Sessions to be held in SML Electronic Classroom, Room 609 (Bring your
Yale ID) Friday, October 19, 3:00-4:30 pm The EndNote software program
helps you to organize your research and easily create bibliographies
while writing a paper. Using EndNote you can save references from
research databases, add notes, insert citations into a document, and
format a bibliography for that document. Register at the Sterling
Library Reference Desk or by e-mail to smlref at yale.edu

  * SAFE BOATING COURSE / (10-20-2007 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM)/
The NH Parks Outdoor Adventure Program will host a combination Safe
Boating and Personal Watercraft course. Upon passing this course,
participants will receive a Certificate of Personal Watercraft
Operation (CPWO), which will allow them to legally operate any
recreational vessel, including a personal watercraft (jetski). Course
taught by the Boating Division of the Department of Environmental
Protection. Barnard Nature Center, Corner of Route 34 and Ella T.
Grasso Blvd. (entrance from route 34) Although this is a 10 hours
long course, we will run it in eight hours, from 9:00AM to 5:00PM.
Please bring lunch, snacks, and  beverages. Space is limited to 20
participants. Cost is $15 per person.  For more information, or to

  * FLU SHOTS, COLD CLINIC AND COAT CLOSET/COAT DRIVE / (10-25-2007 
)/
Come for a free flu shot (2-4pm) and some tips on how to stay healthy
and thrive in the middle of a New England winter (4pm).  Immediately
following the informational session, the Coat Closet will open, where
you can select gently used winter coats and other winter apparel. Have
anything to donate to the Coat Closet?  Please drop any gently used
items off at the McDougal Center Office or the International Center
(421 Temple Street) by October 22.  Email mcdougal.center at yale.edu

  * MSA RAMADAN FOOD DRIVE
During the month of Ramadan, a time of fasting and charity, the
Muslin Students Association at Yale is sponsoring a food drive to
benefit the local New Haven community. Please donate non-perishable
items and canned goods. All proceeds will go to the Downtown Evening
Soup Kitchen (D.E.S.K.) on Temple Street. Donations can be dropped
off at the following locations: McDougal Center, HGS Room
123,;International Center, 421 Temple Street; Sterling Chemistry
(lobby near the main office); 320 York Street; Medical School
(Marigold's Cafeteria); School of Public Health, 47 College Street;

  * SHOWCASE CINEMAS/BOWTIE CINEMAS MOVIE DISCOUNT TICKETS 
The McDougal Center is now proud to start offering movie theater
discount tickets. You can purchase Showcase Cinemas discount tickets
for $7.00 (regular about $10) good for all times (with some theater
exceptions). We now also have BowTie Cinemas discount tickets for
$6.75 (this is the Criterion).  All tickets can be purchased at the
McDougal Center Box Office during normal box office hours.
