  * DEAN'S LECTURE: IN THE COMPANY OF SCHOLARS: LEON PLANTINGA: MUSIC

Lecture with musical illustrations by Leon Plantinga, Henry L. & Lucy
G. Moses Professor Emeritus of Music. Talk in McDougal Common Room,
followed by Reception in 119 HGS. All students, faculty & staff in

  * DRUNK SEX OR DATE RAPE:  CAN YOU TELL THE DIFFERENCE? /

Linsly-Chittenden Hall, Room 101, 63 High Street Brett Sokolow, JD,
presents a conversation on consent in sexual and dating
relationships. Brett is an attorney who specializes in high-risk
student health and safety issues, and is nationally recognized as an
expert on sexual assault and harassment. Presented by the SHARE
Center, YCDO, The Yale Women's Center, and RSVP. All students,

This week features an acoustic band from the School of Economics
called "The Slutskys", in addition to solo piano music by the
virtuosic Jessica Osborne, and the solo guitar playing of Rupert
Boyd.  Stay Tuned for the last Tuesday before Spring Break, when
we'll have an entire orchestra giving a concert in your Common Room!

  * HEARTFEST / (02-27-2008 2:00 - 5:00 PM)/
Heartfest will take place on February 27th 2-5 pm, in the HGS Common
room and Room 119.  Come learn about heart health and ways to improve
your cardiovascular health.  Free blood pressure screening and
delicious healthy food included.  Sponsored by Grad Student life and

The HGS Chefs prepare a variety of tantalizing meat, vegetarian &
vegan entrees, salad & desserts, all made with chocolate. Beverages
provided by HGS dorm social fund, 21+ to drink. All Grad/Prof

Chocolate Festival in February. No undergraduate transfers this

  * GETTING YOUR PAPER PUBLISHED AS HUMANITIES GRADUATE STUDENT: A
PANEL DISCUSSION WITH JOURNAL EDITORS AND FACULTY / (02-27-2008 5:30

Come join us on Wednesday, Feb. 27th, 5-7:30 pm, HGS 119 to hear
advice on how to get your work published in academic journals while
you are in graduate school from a faculty panel of prolific authors
and journal editors. The panel will include faculty members from
History, Religious Studies, History of Art and English. All graduate
students in the Humanities are invited to learn how to navigate the
waters of academic journal publishing. Light dinner will be served.

  * THE MOST FAMOUS MAN IN AMERICA:  DISCUSSION WITH PULITZER PRIZE
AUTHOR DEBBY APPLGATE  / (02-28-2008 4:30 PM)/
THE MOST FAMOUS MAN IN AMERICA is coming to Yale on Thursday,
February 28, 2008. Debby Applegate, Yale Ph.D.alumna and
pulitzer-prize winning author of THE MOST FAMOUS MAN IN AMERICA, will
be speaking in the McDougal Center Common Room from 4:30 - 5:30. 
Reception with food and drink follows.  Also, limited seating is
available for dinner with Ms. Applegate following the reception.

 Tickets for the dinner are $5.

  * IM LEAGUE OFFICIALS AND SOCCER REFEREES WANTED / (02-29-2008 4:00
PM)/
The Grad/Pro Intramurals (IM) leagues of softball and soccer are
looking for commissioners to oversee the spring season. Commissioners
are paid an hourly wage (approx. $12/hour for about 6 hours per day)
to be out at the IM fields on the weekends to settle any disputes on
behalf of the gym.  The IM soccer league is also looking for
officials for the games.  The officials will get paid approx. $25 per
game they officiate.  To apply, please email Carlos Pinela

  * IM SOCCER EARLY REGISTRATION / (02-29-2008 4:00 PM)/
IM Soccer Registration for the spring season will be done earlier
than posted on the webpage.  For those people who are interested in
playing, registration for the soccer season is due Friday, 2/29 by
4pm.  Registration forms need to be in the office by that point in

  * HOCKEY TAILGATE/HOCKEY 101 / (03-01-2008 3:00 - 5:00 PM)/
Everyone loves a great tailgate, but who can stand outside for long
in this weather?  Keep warm and join other grad students for a
pre-game hockey tailgate complete with a ?Hockey 101? talk in the HGS
Common Room at 3pm, hosted by the McDougal Sports and Social Fellows. 
There will be free snacks and alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages
available.  Then, follow us to the Whale (Ingalls Rink) for the last
men?s home hockey game vs. RPI, with faceoff starting at 5:30.  Don't
forget to wear Yale gear and show your pride!  Tickets for the game
are free for students.  You can pick up tickets ahead of time at the
Yale Bookstore, or at the game at the ticket office.  All you need to
do is show your ID.  We are working on securing a block of
tickets/seat space so we can root on our team together!

  * GRAD NIGHT AT CT ROCK GYM CLIMBING CENTER  / (03-02-2008 5:00 -
7:00 PM)/
Join other grad students for a rock climbing night on Sunday night at
5:00-7:00 PM at CT Rock Gym (check out their website
http://www.ctrockgym.com).  Students from all levels are welcome! 
Price for entrance is $20 which includes gear.  Please pay in advance
at McDougal Office (space is limited).  We are also looking for 2-3
volunteers to instruct / train students for this event.  If

(Student instructors will have free entrance to the event).

  * HGS BLOOD DRIVE / (03-03-2008 12:30 - 5:00 PM)/
Come give blood and get a free cup of coffee (plus the knowledge that
you?ve done something good!).  If you don?t want to or can?t give
blood, volunteer to help out for an hour to give out snacks or
check-in appointments. Donor walk-ins are welcome, but if you don?t
want to wait, make an appointment at www.givelife.org and searching
for Yale Blood Drive on 3/3/08. If you want to volunteer, email

  * PEABODY VOUCHERS / (  )/
We are offering Peabody Museum vouchers for children. Vouchers ($5
value) for up to three children can be picked up at the McDougal Box
Office at the McDougal Center between nine and five.  You may want to
take advantage of the upcoming vacation Dino Days at the museum. 
Vouchers will be given out on a first come, first serve basis.

  * COMMON ROOM EVENT NOTICES AND UPDATES / ( )/
The McDougal Common Room will be in use for events this week as
follows: Tues, 2-26, 2-5pm, CR Setup and Talk, Dean's Lecture Tuesday
Blue Dog will close at ~2:30pm on Tuesday, and reopen at ~5:30. Thurs
2-28, 3:30-6pm, CR Setup for Debby Applegate Lecture & Reception.
Check out the new lamps providing better lighting and more outlets to
plug in your laptop. Plus, there are new rolling ottomans for
additional flexible seating.

MCDOUGAL FELLOWS' TIPS OF THE WEEK

  * MEISHA AND MARKUS'S INTERNATIONAL TIP OF THE WEEK
Are you traveling internationally during spring break?  If so, you
should think about getting an International Student ID card (ISIC)
before you leave.  With this card, you will have access to various
student discounts not available to you with just your Yale ID.  For

  * TOM'S ARTS AND CULTURE TIP OF THE WEEK
The fabulous Yale Philharmonia gives a rare performance in the
beautiful acoustics of Sprague Hall this Friday, February 29th at
8PM.  On the Program: Tom Bergeron (that's me!) playing Haydn's
Trumpet Concerto, Ginastera's Orchestra Variations, Mozart's "Magic
Flute" Overture, and Beethoven's "Leonore" Overture.  $5 for
students.  Tickets available at the Sprague Hall Box Office.

  * SUSAN'S KIDS AND FAMILY TIP OF THE WEEK
Since we finally have some snow to play in, I was very disappointed
to note all the "cloned" snowmen around town.  Apparently, people are
purchasing "snowmen kits" complete with eyes, nose and earmuffs. 
Whatever happened to carrots and charcoal?  We actually put some swim
goggles on our snowman, which gave him/her a kind of extra-terrestial
look.  Some snowy creative entertaining projects might include: snow
graffiti art -  mixing some food coloring in spray bottles and spray
painting the snow; having a white on white scavenger hunt with
marshmallows, building all kinds of snow forts and castles, or just
walking around and seeing the snowy patterns of the tree branches. 
It's an easy way to unwind from our studies and enjoy our kids.

As part of its History of the Book series, Christine Petto delivers a
lecture entitled The Lion and the Lily: Power and Cartography in Early
Modern England and France at the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript
Library.  This event is free and open to the public but seating is
limited.

New Haven Theater Company presents the Funny Stages, an evening of
comedy and music, at BAR.  This month's program includes THIS JUST

  * WOMEN FACULTY FORUM TALK: WHY SO SLOW? THE ADVANCEMENT OF WOMEN /

Grad students, faculty & staff are invited to hear Dr. Virginia
Valian, a Professor of Psychology and Linguistics at Hunter
College-CUNY; author of  Why So Slow? The Advancement of Women, (MIT
Press, 1998); and the Hunter College ADVANCE Program Principal
Investigator. Her talk will address why so few women occupy positions
of power and prestige, using concepts and data from psychology,
sociology, economics, and biology to explain the disparity in the
professional advancement of men and women. She will then discuss
strategies for eradicating gender bias and promoting equality and

  * FREE SCREENING OF \"UNTIL THE VIOLENCE STOPS\" / (03-01-2008 2:00

"Until the Violence Stops" documents how playwright and activist Eve
Ensler's "The Vagina Monologues" grew into an international
grassroots movement called V-Day to stop violence against women and
girls.  New Haven Public Library (133 Elm St.), 2pm on March 1st.

New Haven Theater Company presents "V-Day New Haven 2008: Until the
Violence Stops," a multi-media presentation of Eve Ensler's popular
"The Vagina Monologues" and her new work, "A Memory, a Monologue, a
Rant and a Prayer," to benefit Domestic Violence Services of Greater
New Haven and the Global V-Day Campaign.  The Little Theater (1
