Two Yiddish Tales by Avrom Sutzkever
Thu 7 Nov-Mon 11 Nov 2019
Moshe Yassur, director of the critically acclaimed Yiddish Waiting for
Godot, is staging the world theatrical debut of two of poet and partisan
Avrom Sutzkever's lesser-known stories. This intimate pop-up production (5
performances only with 10 seats per show!)
features internationally-renowned Yiddish theater artists Shane Baker and
M"Kh Seigel. Sutzkever's tales from the 1970s and 80s deal with his life as
a Holocaust survivor in contemporary Tel Aviv. Necromantic experiments,
encounters with apparitions, and cases of mistaken identity leave the poet
suspended between two worlds, questioning the very nature of reality, art,
time, space, and life and death. Please note, the evening is entirely in
Yiddish, with no simultaneous translation. There will be a précis in the
program and we can direct you to online English translations or provide you
with the stories in Yiddish to crib in advance of the evening, but the
performances are in Yiddish and Yiddish alone. Please also note that due to
the intimate nature of the space, absolutely no latecomers will be admitted.
