>From the New Haven Register, Dec. 26, 2008:

Southbury-Reservations are being taken for the 24th season of the Shepaug
Bald Eagle Observation Area, which opened Sat. 12/27/08.

The area is run by First Light Power Resources, owner and operator of the
Housatonic River Project hydroelectric facilities.

Observation times are 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays
through March 11.

Admission is free, reservations are required. To reserve, call 800-368-8954
between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays.

The area is popular for eagles in the winter when the turbulence below the
dam keeps the water from freezing over and fish provide a ready food source.

Local experts report an average of eight eagles per day feeding at the dam
this time of year. Other birds seen in the area include red-tail hawks,
sharp-shinned hawks, goshawks, great blue herons and waterfowl.

Specialists will be at the site with high-powered telescopes to help
visitors see the eagles in action and to answer questions. The observation
area is unheated. Bring binoculars if possible.
