Assistant Professor/Instructor of Education: Social Studies

Position: The Department of Education at the University of Minnesota Duluth is seeking applicants for a tenure track Assistant Professor/Instructor position in the field of Social Studies beginning August 31, 2009; or January 2009, if applicant is available to begin in January 2009. This is a nine month appointment with the possibility of summer employment.
Responsibilities: Responsibilities will include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses such as secondary and elementary/middle Social Studies methods. Other responsibilities may include student teacher supervision; advising students in undergraduate and graduate programs; serving on department, university, state-wide committees. Scholarly work including research and publication in refereed journals as well as service contributions are expected.
Qualifications: Essential qualifications include an earned doctorate or ABD in education or related field, two years teaching experience in Social Studies in P-12 classrooms, evidence of effective teaching, and an active research agenda (or demonstrated potential for research).
Desired qualifications include a broad background in the Social Studies and related disciplines (history, geography, economics, anthropology, sociology, political science, government, psychology, or environmental education); ability to integrate social studies across the curriculum; commitment to promoting social justice; commitment to working with students from diverse populations and evidence of integrating social justice issues in the curriculum; experience collaborating in teaching, research, school and community partnerships; experience in teaching with newer educational technologies; experience teaching online and hybrid courses; experience teaching at the university level; experience teaching graduate classes; experience in the supervision of students in P-12 school settings.

The Education Dept: The Department of Education is one of five departments in the College of Education and Human Service Professions. With approximately 1100 students, it is the largest department on campus and offers a wide range of programs. These include: teaching majors in unified early childhood, elementary, secondary/K-12 education; licensure program in special education; certificate programs in autism, educational technology; Master of Education degree programs in different configurations; Master of Special Education; and a Doctor of Education Degree in Teaching and Learning. Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
