REMINDER!

You and your students are warmly invited to participate in
"Conversations on the Land: Indigenous and Scientific Principles for
Sustainable Communities" on November 7-8, 2008. This small conference is
hosted by the Center for Native Peoples and the Environment at SUNY
College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse, with a grant
from SUNY Conversations in the Disciplines. SUNY Cortland, Syracuse
University, the Native American SUNY Western Consortium and the Central
New York Native American Consortium are valued collaborators.

This gathering will bring together academic scholars, indigenous
thinkers and leaders from throughout New York State to think and work
together on one of our most pressing issues. Community members and
students are encouraged to attend. Together we will explore how we might
bring to bear the power of two great intellectual traditions,
traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) and scientific ecological
knowledge (SEK) for our shared concerns of ecological sustainability.

The two day program features plenary speakers, panel discussions and
workshops designed for a lively exchange of ideas and to provide a
foundation for ongoing collaboration. We are honored to have many
gifted speakers, including Oren Lyons of the Onondaga Nation, Neil
Patterson of Tuscarora Nation, Dr. Dan Longboat (Mohawk) and Dr. Holly
Youngbear Tibbetts from the College of the Menominee Nation. We're
looking forward to Drs. Don Grinde (SUNY Buffalo), Chris Vecsey (
Colgate), Karim-Aly Kassam (Cornell) and Stewart Diemont (SUNY ESF)
sharing their expertise. The full program is available at
http://www.esf.edu/outreach/pd/2008/conversations/program.htm .

The conference includes an evening poster session in which you are
encouraged to share a poster highlighting your work. We hope that
discussions around a wide array of posters will provide the beginning of
ongoing collaborations over shared interests.

Full conference details, registration and program are available at the
SUNY ESF Outreach website
http://www.esf.edu/outreach/pd/2008/conversations/default.htm.
Registration is free for students and Haudenosaunee community members,
but pre-registration is required. We hope that you'll be able to join us
for what we anticipate will be a richly rewarding conversation.
