January 13--15, 2012
NMAI on the National Mall

*For many Native American tribes, winter is regarded as storytelling
season. To celebrate this tradition, the museum welcomes Quileute
storyteller *Chris Morganroth III *for the opening of the exhibition
/Behind the Scenes: The Real Story of the Quileute Wolves/, which
explores the culture of the Quileute people as a counterpoint to the
popular /Twilight /series; Tsimshian carver *David Boxley*, who will
unveil his specially commissioned totem pole; the *Git-Hoan* ("People of
the Salmon") *Dancers*, a traditional Alaskan dance group; as well as
students from the *St. Labre Indian School* in Montana, who will perform
powwow-style dances and drumming.

This exhibition brings together rare works of art as a counterpoint to
the supernatural storyline of the popular /Twilight/ films. Interpreted
by the Quileute people of coastal Washington, /Behind the Scenes: The
Real Story of the Quileute Wolves /offers an intimate look into the
tribe's artwork and wolf creation stories, which are central to the
Quileute world view.

The exhibition includes two wolf headdresses from different regions, as
well as replicas of items used on the /Twilight/ set; a Paddle necklace
symbolizing the "canoe culture," and a necklace made from 3,000-year-old
Olivella shells.

/This headdress belonged to Tyler Hobucket (1889--1960) and originates
from the Nuu-chah-nulth First Nation, possibly Nitinat on Vancouver Island./

The museum welcomes Tsimshian carver *David Boxley *and his son *David
Boxley Jr.* for the official unveiling of a specially commissioned,
22-foot-high totem pole that will be permanently installed in the
museum's Potomac Atrium.

As artists-in-residence January 4-11, Boxley and his son completed and
painted the totem pole in the museum's Potomac Atrium as visitors
watched and learned about the carving tradition and the story that their
newest creation illustrates.
