Brief Job Description:
Summary:
This position heads the Editorial department within the Communications Division of the Harvard Art Museums.
Duties & responsibilities:
* Oversees editorial work of all department and outside staff and projects, including scholarly catalogues and books, exhibition text and gallery labels and materials, museum magazine and email newsletter, Institutional Advancement materials, Division of Academic and Public Programs materials, digital, website, brochures, invitations, and other collateral materials.
* Working with the Director of Communications, develops and refines the museums' editorial guidelines and procedures; oversees execution of established practices.
* Working closely with the Creative Director, guides all publication projects through proofing, including oversight of internal and external peer review processes.
* Manages the museums' agreement and relationship with distributor Yale University Press.
* Collaborating with project generators and other key stakeholders, establishes short and long-term global publication schedules for all editorial projects and develops new strategies and protocols for emerging media.
* Responsible for staff management, including hiring, supervision, strategic planning, budgeting and performance management of the Editorial staff currently consisting of one copy editor and one additional copy editor to be hired as well as freelance and contract editors.
* Assigns and supervises editorial staff in conjunction with museum deadlines, escalating timetables to meet deadlines as necessary. Ensures an appropriate and scaled allocation of editorial time and resources for respective projects so as to maintain consistency with institutional mandates and client needs; establishes efficiencies for smaller projects.
* Confirms client satisfaction with work on a consistent basis and advises staff on necessary changes to their approach, serving as Editorial liaison for client relationships with museum staff that may include curators, educators, development staff, and technologists, as well as staff in the Communications Division.
* Acts as a project editor as required, performing a high level of substantive and copy editing.
