SUMMER RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES FOR UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS INTERESTED
                     IN COLLECTIONS-BASED SCIENCE

Through a National Science Foundation Award to Improve the
Ichthyological
Collection of the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory Museum and the
University of
Southern Mississippi, funds are available to support up to 3
undergraduate
students for 12 weeks this summer (mid May - August, 1999).

Students taking advantage of this research opportunity will assist
Museum staff
in the identification, curation, and cataloging of fishes in these
collections.
As part of their research experience, students will receive training in
basic
ichthyology and ichthyoplanktology, as well as fundamental principles of
museum
curation, taxonomy, systematics, and research use of computers and the
Internet.

Students will be required to work 20/wk (@$1,000 per month). Limited
funds are
also available for boarding fees, travel support, and tuition credit
hours for a
special topics course during the GCRL summer program.

Students interested in applying for these summer positions are urged to
contact
Dr. Stuart G. Poss, Gulf Coast Research Laboratory Museum, P.O. Box
7000, Ocean
Springs, MS 39566-7000 before 15 May 1999. Applicants must be registered
undergraduate students in good standing at a U.S. college or university.

Those applying are asked to send a two to three page letter detailing
their
research interests and professional career goals, a copy of their
college
transcripts, and two letters of recommendation. Selection will be made
on a
competitive basis, dependent upon scholastic merit, professional
potential, and
convincing expression of interest in taxonomy and systematic biology.
Individuals of groups under-represented in systematics and taxonomy are
particularly encouraged to apply, with consideration given to especially
promising
individuals, who have had few previous research opportunities.
