The UC Botanical Garden is hiring a full time person who will work half
time supervising the horticulture staff, and half time as a horticulturist
in the New World Desert section of the Garden. The following job

Job Duties: Supervisory position. Under direction of the Manager of
Collections and Horticulture, supervise all horticulture staff: Hire,
review work, assign duties, and complete evaluations. Plan and supervise
collections maintenance functions such as planting, fertilizing, pest and
weed control, landscaping, hardscaping, etc. Implement a biological control
program. Produce and monitor budgets for maintenance and development of
collections, the grounds and infrastructure. Oversee construction projects,
including horticultural buildings and irrigation systems. Supervise
maintenance of all Garden infrastructure. Oversee purchase of grounds
maintenance supplies. Design, plan, and maintain area assigned in
accordance with curatorial policies. Maintain plant health, area tidiness,
and aesthetic appeal. Perform hardscape activities including
installation/repair of irrigation systems, resurfacing/grading of paths,
rockwork, and erosion control. Operate garden equipment. Use chemicals
under guidance of licensed staff to control pests as needed. Required
qualifications: Bachelors degree in horticulture, or equivalent experience.
Three or more years of experience in personnel supervision
and in formulating and managing budgets, or an equivalent combination of
education and experience. Demonstrated ability to coordinate a diverse
staff. Effective organizational and record keeping skills. Ability to work
both independently and as part of a team, set and meet objectives, and
coordinate objectives with other staff and with Botanical Garden policy.
Ability to maintain accurate records and to research collection
acquisitions and their horticultural requirements through botanical literature.
Note that this position requires both supervisory and horticultural
experience. The New World Desert is a highly visible and popular
collection, and includes taxa from North and South America.
