Museum Assistant I -- Paleobotany.  The Yale Peabody Museum of Natural 
History seeks a Museum Assistant I for Paleobotany.  The Museum Assistant 
will assist the Collections Manager and Curator in the upcoming move, and 
in the reorganizing and continuing maintenance of the Paleobotany 
collections.  This is a two year grant funded position (NSF Grant DEB 9987475).

Essential Duties
1. Carries out curatorial activities to maintain the order of the 
collection and to ensure the special care, security and proper handling of 
collection material.
2. Assists in the physical move of the Paleobotany collections and library 
to permanent new collection space.
3. Assists in preparing, sorting and identifying specimens for use and 
storage including stratigraphic and taxonomic identification; preparation 
of specimens, trays and labels for cu ration; placement of specimens in 
proper location within the collection.
4. Catalogues specimens, using Argus, a complex relations database; creates 
constituent,                                       locality, documentation 
and specimen records for new acquisitions and uncurated specimens following 
established divisional guidelines and museum standards.
5. Documents bibliographic, stratigraphic, geologic, geographic and 
taxonomic
histories of specimens using Argus.
6. Reconstructs, repairs, and restores specimens using standard 
preservation and conservation techniques.
7. Selects specimens for display.  Prepares collection for exhibition.  May 
assist with installing and disassembling exhibits.
8. Performs clerical functions incidental to curatorial activities.

Experience and Training
1. Six years of related work experience, four of them in the same job 
family at the next lower level, and a high school level education; or four 
years of related work experience and an Associate degree; or little or no 
work experience and Bachelor degree in a related field; or an equivalent 
combination of experience and of experience and education.
2. PREFERRED: One year experience in museum collections management 
activities. Bachelor's degree in geology or botany.

Skills and Abilities
1. Experience with computerized databases.
2. Familiar with literature relating to geology needed.
3. Must be able to lift 30 pounds, must be comfortable on ladders and 
elevated platforms.
4. PREFERRED: Ability to conduct geological and paleontological library 
research.
