Jane,
I'm afraid I can't help you with the history of the vasculum. I have,
however, put together a quick and dirty web page (which will be expanded
upon in the future) about John Davidson, the first Provincial Botanist of
British Columbia and first Director of the UBC Botanical Garden, with images
of the vasculum that he used. I've not put any links to the page from the
rest of the site, as it needs to be "polished" before release to the general
public, but maybe it will be of some interest to you or anyone else on the
listserv in the meantime.
