CURATOR/LABORATORY MANAGER

JOB #01-08-30   PART TIME/CAREER
30 hours/week; time reduced to 20 hours/week during July & August

MINIMUM STARTING SALARY:  $3236/month, proportionate to hours worked

SUMMARY OF DUTIES:  Under the general direction the selected candidate will
be responsible for the curation of the Museum of Natural History
Collections, management of the teaching laboratories and the field
equipment pool, and oversight of environmental health and safety issues for
all teaching and research labs.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:  Museum Direction:  plan for the
direction, programs, priorities and daily operation of the Museum of
Natural History Collections; develop and manage the operating budget;
determine acquisition of specimens; represent the MNHC in museum-based,
field-based or other research; advise students and faculty who need museum
materials or information on California's natural resources for their
research; acquire and maintain all permits required by state, federal and
international regulatory agencies.  Museum Curation:  perform collection
management duties, including the maintenance, organization, cataloging, and
accessioning of the collections; prepare specimens for use in teaching and
research; promote and coordinate the use of the collections; select, train,
and supervise volunteers and paid employees; develop science internships;
give lectures as appropriate; provide species identification; develop and
conduct pest control measures to safeguard collections.  Laboratory
Support:  provide technical, managerial and supervisory support for
Environmental Studies teaching labs; supervise the preparation, set-up and
take-down of class demonstrations and teaching aids; coordinate purchase
and acquisition of supplies and equipment; assist in instructional
demonstrations, experimental procedures, and field exercises; inspect
physical facilities, making appropriate arrangements for repair,
modification or replacement; design and maintain safety and procedures
manuals and training programs; ensure proper safety procedures are followed
in storing, using and disposing of hazardous materials; inspect labs for
compliance with Environmental Health and Safety regulations; coordinate
emergency response plan.  Field Equipment Management:  ensure the
availability and workability of equipment and supplies for teaching and
research; instruct users in the general care and use of equipment; maintain
inventory and record keeping system to monitor status of equipment
including check-out, return and necessary follow-up procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS INCLUDE (with or without accommodation):  Bachelor's degree
in biological sciences or an equivalent combination of education and
experience; experience in the curation of biological materials; experience
with specimen preparatory techniques for plants, insects, fish, amphibians,
reptiles, birds, and mammals; experience supervising paid and/or non-paid
employees in a museum setting; comprehensive knowledge of concepts and
technical practices in one or more of the disciplines of botany, zoology,
or ecology; general knowledge of the identification, taxonomy,
distribution, and life history of the plants, insects, fishes, amphibians,
reptiles, birds and mammals of California; specialized knowledge of one or
more of these taxonomic groups; familiarity with laboratory safety
procedures, especially the proper handling and disposal of hazardous and
bio-hazardous materials; familiarity with Macintosh-based word processing,
spreadsheets, and data management systems.  The abilities to:  operate and
maintain standard laboratory and field equipment such as balances, pH
meters, microscopes, incubators, compasses, clinometers, water and soil
monitoring kits, etc.; set priorities; work independently; pay strong
attention to details, and to maintain organized records; interact
effectively with a diverse group of faculty, staff, students and others.
Preferred Qualifications:  certification in CPR and basic First Aid;
familiarity with database software.
