Museum Assistant I - Vertebrate Paleontology
PEABODY MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY 

The Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History seeks a Museum Assistant for
Vertebrate Paleontology. Reporting to the Vertebrate Paleontology
Collections Manager, the museum assistant will work with the Collections
Manager and Curator of the collections in the growth, maintenance and
safeguarding of the Vertebrate Paleontology collections and archives.

Major Duties:  
Serve as a source of specialized information to the public, visiting
scholars, and students; explain and describe the collection and available
reference material through workshops, lectures, and in response to
inquiries; identify specimens using taxonomic and skeletal criteria;
prepare specimens, trays, and labels for curation; place specimens in
proper location within the collection; retrieve and prepare specimens for
research and loans; ensure the security and proper handling of collections
and exhibits;  catalog specimens using Argus, a complex relational
database; create constituent, locality, documentation, and specimen records
for new acquisitions and uncurated collections following established
divisional guidelines and museum standards; maintain accession, loan
records, etc. for proper scientific and historical documentation of
collections; maintain division's reprint library;  assist in the growth of
the collections through field work; assist in the reconstruction, repair,
and restoration of specimens using preservation and conservation
techniques; select specimens for display; prepare collection for
exhibition; may assist with installing and disassembling exhibits; compose
correspondence related to the collection and exhibits; perform clerical
functions incidental to curatorial activities.

Qualifications: 
Required: Bachelor's degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination
of experience and education. Experience with computerized databases. 

Preferred: Bachelor's degree in Geology/Zoology; Two years experience
working in vertebrate paleontology collections. Experience in library
science; experience in conservation science (including paper documents,
books, reprints, and photographs). Experience (osteology, biography, field
collection) in one or more of the following: Paleozoic vertebrates,
Mesozoic vertebrates, Paleogene vertebrates, fish.

Skills and Abilities
Must be able to lift 30 pounds; must be comfortable working on ladders and
elevated platforms.
