Dear Sir/Madam

A review of Scottish fossil bearing, SSSI and un-notified GCR sites is currently
being undertaken by Scottish Natural Heritage. The review will have important
implications for determining long term site management strategies, and where
applicable, the development of safeguard plans for vulnerable sites. The first
step of this review is to identify current research and amateur collector
activity and is being carried out as a joint project between Scottish Natural
Heritage and the National Museums of Scotland.

In order to help identify current research activity, we are asking the following
questions to all potential researchers from UK institutions:

 - Are you working on a Scottish fossil bearing SSSI or un-notified GCR site* at
present, or do you intend to do so within the next year?

 - Have you or your project collaborator(s) been involved with fieldwork at the
site(s)?

Please respond to this e-mail, answering either:

- Yes to both questions: we have a short questionnaire regarding your research
that we would like to put to you. The information that you would supply is
absolutely crucial to the review and I hope that you will be prepared to be
involved.

- No to either or both of the questions: for this research, your confirmation of
non-involvement with the sites is equally as important as a completed
questionnaire, as we can then be certain that we are obtaining as clear a
picture as possible of the usage of the sites involved.

Finally, if you have any questions about the project, general comments on
current site management strategies, or can suggest either another researcher or
amateur collector (either within or outwith your institution) that you feel we
should speak to, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Yours sincerely,

Vicen Carrió

* A list of sites included in the review is attached as an Excel file. If you
would like the file in another format, please get in touch.
