CONSERVATOR JOB DESCRIPTION

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (NHMLAC) seeks a
full-time
general objects conservator to work with the museum's distinguished
collections. These collections include anthropology, botany, history,
paleontology, mineralogy, as well as most of the zoological disciplines.

Responsibilities include a full range of conservation work on the
Museum’s permanent collection of 33 million objects and specimens,
including
maintenance and treatment of diversified collections, recommendations on

storage and handling, and development and operation of a conservation
laboratory and facilities. As the museum's objects conservator,
considerable attention will be given to assessing the overall
priorities for the NHMLAC's collections, including developing museum-
wide
programs such as integrated pest management and preventive
conservation. The Museum also has an active traveling exhibit program,
and the conservator will be expected to monitor both incoming and
outgoing loans. In addition to the main site at Exposition Park, the
conservator will also oversee and care for collections at two satellite
museums, The George C. Page Museum and the William S. Hart Home.

NHMLAC is currently engaged in planning a larger more modern museum that

will include a new building ,physical plant, exhibit halls and
collection
storage facilities based at Exposition Park. The conservator will also
play
a role in planning the conservation needs for this facility and
supervising
a temporary collection move in conjunction with the new building.

A successful candidate should have a master's degree from a recognized
conservation training program and have at least five years of experience
as
an objects conservator, preferably working in a museum environment.
Experience with natural history collections is especially desirable.
The
position demands a sound knowledge of physical and organic chemistry as
applied to conservation treatments as well as an understanding of
preservation theory and ethics. Applicant should be able to work
independently as well as part of a larger team. Interpersonal skills,
familiarity with preservation and conservation issues as well as
management
and planning experience are a must. Supervised within the Registration
Department, the conservator will work in close collaboration with the
Museum's Research and Collections Division as well as the Exhibit
Division.

Salary range will be commensurate with experience. Position includes
full
benefits. Please send resume, cover letter, and three letters of
recommendation to: Vicki Gambill, Chief Registrar, Natural History
Museum,
900 Exposition Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90007. No phone calls please.
