[NHCOLL-L:1678] wooden sewer pipe protection

A friend from a local historical society has asked about ways to preserve sections of wooden sewer pipes from
the late 1800's.  Some have tar on ends, others have metal bands around the pipes in places, some are just plain
hollowed out wood.

I've looked at the literature on wooden ships but wonder if anyone has had experiences with these type of pipes directly that could offer suggestions?
