PRATT MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY

INTERIM DIRECTOR 

Pratt Museum of Natural History at Amherst College is moving from its
present building and seeks to fill the position of Interim Director to
facilitate this transition. The new building will house both Amherst's
Geology Department and the Museum. This project is internally funded as
part of campus renovations with the new facilities still in the design
phase.  This is a 3-year term position to begin now and continue through
occupancy of the new building, currently anticipated in late 2006.

The Interim Director will work with Geology faculty to plan and direct
the removal of the collections and exhibits from the existing building
and their installation in the new facility. Responsibilities are broad
and will include the following:  general project oversight; liaison with
geology department, building architects and museum exhibit designers;
verification of display content and text; recruitment and supervision of
contract employees to carry out all aspects of moving the museum
collections and exhibits.

Qualifications:  extensive experience in a natural history museum;
previous supervisory and managerial experience; and a demonstrated
ability to complete major projects on schedule.  Preference will be
given to those who have at least 5 years natural history museum
experience, at least 2 years supervisory and managerial experience in
that context, vertebrate paleontology background and experience in a
museum move or renovation.

The Pratt Museum houses Amherst College's natural history collections,
including the world-famous Hitchcock ichnology collection. These
collections date back to the founding of the college in 1821 and consist
of extensive vertebrate paleontology, mineralogy, invertebrate
paleontology, and type specimen collections. In addition, there are
smaller but significant geology, osteology, anthropology and ethnography
