Originally printed in 1960, 25 years of labor went into Trees, Shrubs, and
Woody Vines of the Southwest by the late Robert A. Vines, which describes
and illustrates more than 1,200 species of native and naturalized woody
plants of the southwestern United States. The book covers Texas, New
Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana. The author traveled more than
250,000 miles by car, on foot, and horseback. The species described are
grouped into 102 chapters, each chapter representing a different plant
family. Accompanying the text are more than 1,200 black-and-white drawings
by Sarah Kahlden Arendale.
"This monumental work, describing 1231 species of woody plants, with 1240
illustrations, is an incredible achievement in the history of natural
science publishing. It is an immense production, indispensable to
naturalists of the region." American Forests

Manual of Southeastern Flora by John K. Small (ISBN 1-930665-16-4)
In a two-volume set, Manual of Southeastern Flora provides an exhaustive
description of the native and naturalized plants growing naturally in the
southeastern United Sates south of North Carolina and Tennessee and East of
the Mississippi River. The species are grouped in genera, families, and
orders and are so arranged and described that they may be identified by
means of the analytical keys and synopses given under each group, mainly by
a study of the morphology of the flowers and fruits.

Manual of Cultivated Trees and Shrubs by Alfred Rehder (ISBN 1-930665-326)
For each of the 2,300 species of trees and shrubs covered in the book,
Rehder included a concise physical description, as well as time of flowering
and fruiting, references to published illustrations, region of native
habitat, date of introduction into cultivation, hardiness zone, and comments
on horticultural merit or special cultural requirements. He gave
distinguishing features and pertinent information for 2,465 varieties. Brief
mention was included of another 1,265 species and 507 hybrids that were
either less well known or rarely cultivated. Its value to nurserymen,
gardeners, arborists, botanical garden curators, and anyone else needing to
identify trees and shrubs became readily apparent.
