What you probably need to look for is an office level printer using
archival ink sets. These will have pigmented black inks. An example
would be Epsons Durabrite inks. Many of the higher level photographic
quality printers also use archival inks, but you have to be careful
here. Many inksets are now developed with the papers (matched sets).
Hence if you try to print on non-matched paper then the quality can be
terrible. The office levels printers tend to be more tolerant of the
paper used. I'm not up-to-date with all this currently - the technology
keeps shifting. However there is a pile of data here on inks and
permanence http://www.wilhelm-research.com/.

Wedi ei archwilio am feirysau gan Amgueddfeydd ac Orielau Cenedlaethol
Cymru. Checked for viruses by National Museums & Galleries of Wales.

All,

I am looking for a printer to use to print out our specimen catalog,
currently written by hand. The only printers I've found that claim to
print archival quality are color printers. Can anyone recommend a
reasonably priced black and white printer for archival printing?
Alternatively, is it possible to add archival quality ink to a standard
inkjet printer cartridge? I remember hearing years ago about adding
your own ink to printer cartridges to save money.

any advice appreciated,
Tamar
