JOB DESCRIPTION

 

 

TITLE:                                    Collections Assistant

 

DEPARTMENT:                     Exhibits & Collections (452)

 

GRADE:                                  11

 

 

Summary

 

Boston Children's Museum is seeking one temporary full-time Collections Assistant to join the Collections Team.  The team's focus will be to process collections for registration, deaccession or relocation.  The collections to be processed include natural history specimens as well as cultural and historical artifacts.  The Collections Assistants will work together as a team to collect and record data, document, pack and relocate collections.

 

 

Accountabilities

 

*	Create and enter data on collections database 

*	Identify, describe, and measure objects 

*	Record materials, location, condition, subjects, and dates 

*	Process collections items for registration as well as for proposed deaccession 

*	Label and inventory collections 

*	Take digital photographs 

*	File paperwork and enter data on PastPerfect database software 

 

 

Qualifications

 

*         Minimum requirements:  B.A. in museum studies, biology, history, anthropology, or related discipline required.  One year of museum-related experience required; one or more years of experience cataloging museum objects, and experience with collections databases preferred.

*         Experience: One year's experience in a museum collections environment preferred.  Knowledge of professional museum standards and experience in museum procedures, including registration procedures and methods of documenting and handling art and artifacts.  

*         Education: B.A. in museum studies, biology, history, anthropology, or related discipline required.  

*         Skills: Strong computer skills, including ability to maintain and organize a database.  Strong attention to detail.  Familiarity with digital cameras and image management.  Ability to analyze and resolve problems.  Good oral and written communication skills, including neat handwriting. Flexibility to handle multiple requests simultaneously.  Ability to work as a member of a team and also independently.

 

Other Factors

 

*         Ability to lift and reach objects overhead, maneuver in small and tight spaces, and lift up to 50 lbs. to move objects within a museum space. Sufficient stamina to work at computer for extended periods, with appropriate breaks. Climbing and balancing on ladders to reach objects and supplies. Occasional stooping, kneeling, and crouching to read accession numbers on objects.
