Hello -
Boston Children's Museum has some natural history items that we have
recently deaccessioned. We would like to find good homes for these
items with other museums. Most of these items are without data, many
are not identified (beyond basics like 'bird' or 'nest'), and some may
be misidentified. Some items are not in great shape. We have at least
several dozen items in the following categories: birds, nests, rocks
and miscellaneous.
If you are interested, please contact me and I will send you Excel
spreadsheets with lists of what's available.
Background: BCM began collecting in 1913 and was strongly focused on
natural history in its first few decades. Collecting fell off sharply
around the 1950s and use of the natural history collection petered out
almost to nothing by 1980. The building is undergoing a major
construction project now and into next year - we have used the changes
to the building as an opportunity to catalogue and cull our natural
history items. Many of the items we've deaccessioned are in great
shape, but they are no longer appropriate for our museum. We have
already relocated many items to other local museums. And we are under
time constraints. The sooner we can clear out these deaccessioned
specimens (particularly the large birds, like the peacock), the better.
Please feel free to call or email with questions. I'm happy to send
spreadsheets to anyone who's interested.
