Major Duties:
Serves as Museum Specialist in charge of management of Anatomical
Collection of the NMHM. Handles a collection of over 9,000 wet tissue
and 5,000 dry bone specimens preserved by Museum in fields of history,
pathology, trauma, human variation, and related areas. Serves as
Collections Manager, supervising and performing day-to-day activities in
collection, collections management, assisting in evaluation of potential
acquisitions, directing conservation activities for collection,
developing relevant policies, conducting original research on artifacts
in collection for publications and lectures, preparing grants to provide
funding for division activities and establishing affiliations with
professional associations to expand museum's holdings. Tasks are
specialized within medical and historical subject areas and require
functional specialization in collections management. (See additional

About the Position: This position is located at the Armed Forces
Institute of Pathology, which is located on the grounds of the Walter
Reed Army Medical Center, 6900 Georgia Avenue NW, Washington, DC, near
the Silver Spring, MD border. The work requires sitting, walking,
reaching, bending and the use of hands as well as lifting objects up to
40 pounds in weight. It is generally performed in research, storage,
exhibit and lab areas. 
		
*  Other duties: Responsible for collections development and management,
including developing policy and collecting agendas for Anatomical
Collections and for establishing and maintaining joint collecting
ventures with professional associations and coordinating related special
events. Prepares collections and records for safe storage and use by
researchers and exhibitors. Responsible for appraisal of items for
research value and relevance to museum collections; development and
implementation of appropriate descriptive materials and arrangement of
those materials for a variety of uses; selection, creation and
publication, of finding aids and evaluation and implementation of
optimal storage means. Plans and implements use of collections, storage
sites, work and office areas. Locates and applies for grants and other
external funding mechanisms to help fund division activities. Tasks
include evaluation and application of appropriate handling techniques to
extend useful life of collections and/or referral of fragile artifacts
to specialized conservator attention. Specifically, these tasks include
cataloging, documenting, inventorying, photographing, receiving, packing
and providing security for collections as appropriate. Develops and
maintains electronic databases for research, internal use and
dissemination. Develops and directs a program to ensure compliance with
the Native American Graves protection and Repatriation Act (43 CFR 10);
and coordinating and negotiating repatriation of human remains and
cultural items to culturally affiliated Native groups as mandated by
law. Performs research for publication, exhibition, and lectures.
Conducts and conveys research on collections management and conservation
procedures and policies. Performs and provides technical research
services in specialized areas in the collections and answers official,
professional, and public inquiries by written correspondence or in
person. Obtains and conveys information in related areas as needed.
Assists staff and visiting researchers in use of collections, supervises
handling of artifacts, makes decisions on access or availability of
records, and provides security for anatomical specimens. Contributes to
planning, organization, and teaching of Annual Forensic Anthropology
course, which involves developing course content, researching methods in
forensic anthropology, suggesting, and preparing osteological specimens,
equipment, teaching aids, and supplies for use in lab. Organization
includes scheduling of topics and speakers, arrangement and set up of
lab area. Contribute to preparation of manual in forensic anthropology
to be used in course, involving researching existing literature and
suggesting, designing, and preparing charts and tables. Selects and
prepares objects for exhibits and publication, participating in
conservation of delicate objects. Makes contributions to exhibits by
participating in planning, and advising on displaying artifacts.

*  Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the
last 52 weeks must meet the Time in Grade Restriction. 
*  One year of experience in the same or similar work equivalent to at
least the next lower grade or level requiring application of the
knowledge, skills, and abilities of the position being filled. 
*  Must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the second lower grade (or
equivalent). 
*  GS-12 and above: One year of experience directly related to the
occupation and equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. There
is no substitution of education for experience at this level.
