Communications Officer

 

The Biodiversity Institute at the University of Kansas on the Lawrence
campus, seeks a Communications Officer to oversee all public relations
for this dynamic research and museum enterprise. The successful
candidate will have 3+ years professional experience in
communications/marketing, etc., a bachelor's degree in communications or
related field, experience translating scholarly work for the public,
experience with membership programs and advisory boards, excellent oral
and written communications skills.

The Biodiversity Institute, a unit in the research sector of The
University of Kansas, conducts research in evolutionary biology and
biodiversity science, maintains the collections of recent and extinct
animals and plants that document its work, and provides related programs
and resources (including a natural history museum) for the benefit of
the public. The Communications Director is responsible for the
institute's print and electronic communications, public relations and
publicity, development and board relations, and membership activities.
The Communications Director advises and assists the director and staff
members with all aspects of the institute's public communications
activities.  

 

Required Qualifications

1) Bachelor's degree or higher in communications, journalism, marketing,
museum studies or field of science closely related to the institute's
mission 
2) Professional experience (3 + years) in communications, marketing or
public relations preferably for a museum, other scientific or cultural
organization or similar enterprise 
3) Demonstrated ability to communicate complex scholarly ideas and
activities to the public in engaging and informative ways based on
application materials, interview performance and work samples. 
4) Excellent oral and written communication skills based on work
samples/portfolio and working knowledge of production software 
5) Experience or familiarity with membership programs  

 

Preferred Qualifications

1)       Advanced degree in communications, journalism, marketing,
museum studies or closely related field of science 

2)       Direct professional experience with membership programs,
development activities and board relations 

3)       Experience communicating scientific principles and activities
to the public 

4)       Working knowledge of the scientific research process and
university, state and federal policies affecting that process 

5)       Experience collaborating with web or publication designers 

6)       Experience working with the diverse audiences served by a
museum or cultural organization including children and families,
university students, scholars, administrators, donors, legislators, etc.
