CURATORIAL ASSISTANT II
HERPETOLOGY
PART-TIME, 20 HOURS PER WEEK
POSITION SUMMARY: This is a part-time, twenty hour per week position in the
Department of Herpetology. The Curatorial Assistant II works under the
supervision of the Collections Manager in developing and maintaining
specimen collections and associated records, and performs related database
queries and loan processing.
TYPICAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assists with the maintenance of departmental collection and its
updating, organization, and accessioning of new specimens
- Assists in the maintenance and development of computerized
records of the collection or of special projects
- Assists with processing of collection loans; may involve
shipping, receiving and preparation of specimens loaned; may involve
correspondence and maintenance of accurate records of loans and exchanges
- Responsible for all aspects of specimen preparations
- Will give departmental tours, public demonstrations and answer
public inquiries
Responsible for organizing Department library
- May work with and train volunteers and assist visitors to the
department as assigned
- Follow all Academy safety regulations
Other duties as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelors degree in natural sciences or the equivalent
combination of education and experience required; graduate students in
herpetology preferred
- Relevant technical experience
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to work independently and cooperatively with staff,
visitors and volunteers
- Ability to type accurately minimum of 45 WPM and handle computer
functions, MS Word, MS Excel and understanding of relational database
- Ability to responsibly handle valuable, irreplaceable and
delicate materials
- Specific knowledge of herpetological collections and taxonomy
preferred
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and
maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine
reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of
customers or employees of organization.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required
to stand, sit, walk, and reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear.
Requires an ability to lift fifty (35) pounds, carry/pull thirty-five (35)
pounds, perform repetitive motions twenty percent (20%) of the time and to
climb rolling ladder.
COMPENSATION and BENEFITS
$16.5910/hour, 20 hours per week with part-time benefits package.
