Announcement and Breakfast Invitation

We are looking forward to seeing you at the 2007 Annual Meeting of the
Society for the Preservation of Natural History Collections, on May
21-26, at the Science Museum of Minnesota (www.smm.org/spnhc
<http://www.smm.org/spnhc> ).

The Announcement:

At SPNHC, the Specify Software Project is releasing the first component
of our new, extendible, Specify 6 collections management system, a
standalone software tool: the Specify 6 WorkBench.

The WorkBench is an innovative and specialized program for assembling
and editing batches of collections data. It creates specimen data sets
through keyboard data entry or through batch data import, and it manages
them in a spreadsheet-like workspace. The WorkBench organizes and adds
value to your data through internal features and network plug-ins. Data
sets created in the WorkBench will be easily imported into the full
version of Specify 6 when it is released later this year.

The Specify 6 WorkBench is a statement of the Specify Software Project's
technology vision of highly-usable, cross-platform, database software
for managing collections and mobilizing specimen data onto the Internet.
The Workbench is written in Java and runs identically on Windows, Linux
and Mac OS X computers. But we don't want to spill all the beans here!

The Invitation:

On Wednesday morning we are throwing a breakfast release party for the
Specify 6 WorkBench in the meeting hotel, the Holiday Inn RiverCentre.
Join us in the Cathedral Room at 7:00 AM for morning nourishment and
fluids and we'll entertain you with a brief preview of the WorkBench and
give you a copy of it too!

If you can join us for breakfast, RSVP now to: specify at ku.edu. SPNHC
meeting registration begins at 8:00 AM at the Science Museum a few
blocks from the Holiday Inn.

Another Invitation:

During the day on Wednesday, May 23rd and Thursday May 24th, we will be
conducting 30 minute usability interviews in a conference room adjacent
to the main SPNHC event in the Science Museum. We're looking for
volunteers to assess the usability of our upcoming Specify 6 full
release. If you have the time and interest to take a peek at our new
software and help us improve it, please consider visiting with us for 30
minutes. There will be a sign up sheet for interview times on the SPNHC
meeting registration desk on Wednesday and Thursday.

Please stop by and say hello at our table in the SPNHC Vendor Fair area.
We will see you soon!
