Connecting to Collections: The National Tour Kicks off in Atlanta
 (http://heritage.pmailus.com/pmailweb/ct?d=EVMBIQAuAAP-----AAGjCw)
Heritage Preservation and the Institute of Museum and Library Services are
building on the success of the _Connecting to Collections_
(http://heritage.pmailus.com/pmailweb/ct?d=EVMBIQAuAAMAAACeAAGjCw) National Summit last June,
taking the initiative on the road to four cities around the country. Each
meeting will reach a broad audience and inspire participants to share lessons
learned and make collections care a top priority.
The first forum will be Preserving America’s Diverse Heritage on January 31
and February 1, 2008, at the High Museum of Art and Woodruff Arts Center in
Atlanta, Georgia. Over 300 participants from 41 states and the District of
Columbia will hear top conservators and other distinguished professionals
address issues such as caring for objects of cultural sensitivity and
photographs and audio-visual materials, as well as the need for improved storage and
emergency planning. _More.... _

New Program Helps Museums Develop Emergency Plans
Small and mid-sized museums in Mississippi, Ohio, and Texas can now _apply
_ (http://heritage.pmailus.com/pmailweb/ct?d=EVMBIQAuAAQAAAB5AAGjCw) to
participate in Heritage Preservation’s new pilot project, the _Risk Evaluation and
Planning Program (REPP)_
(http://heritage.pmailus.com/pmailweb/ct?d=EVMBIQAuAAQAAAEhAAGjCw) . The program provides each participating museum with a
professional evaluation of risks to its collections, priorities for mitigating
those risks, and assistance in creating or updating an emergency plan. Five
institutions from each state will be selected in May 2008.
Applications can now be downloaded and must be submitted electronically no
later than March 31, 2008.
The project supports a two-day site visit by a team of assessors—a
preservation professional and emergency responder. The assessors will identify
hazards to the museum’s collections and facilities, work with staff to develop
priorities for mitigation, and offer resources to help develop a new or improved
emergency plan. Assessments will take place between July and October 2008,
and emergency plans must be submitted to Heritage Preservation within six
months of the site visit. _More....

Unity, a dynamic mural on Shattuck Avenue in Berkeley, California, has
recently been nominated for assessment by Rescue Public Murals. The mural is a
local landmark that incorporates the façade of the La Peña Cultural Center, a
vibrant community group that promotes peace, social justice, and cultural
understanding through arts events, educational programs, exhibits, and artists’
residencies. _More.... _
