Subj: RCAAM deaccessioning natural history collections
Hello List,
It has been suggested to us by a conservator that we deaccession and/or
re-house our taxidermy specimens. We use our collection primarily for exhibit,
but there is some research potential to some of the pieces. The dilemma is,
if we remove a 1930’s robin and send it to hazardous waste for destruction
then that is one 1930s robin less to be used for scientific research.
I’m wondering who of you with NH collections out there have deaccessioned
specimens?
Was it done because their condition was no longer exhibit quality? Or
because they were hazardous? Or for a different reason? Did you have to go
through a hazardous waste facility to dispose of them?
Did you save certain pieces for research?
Did you upgrade for exhibit purposes – to get a better looking mount.
Did you pass deaccessioned material on to another institution such as a
university for addition to a study collection? Or is that not acceptable because
they are hazardous.
For the collections that were kept, are they stored in boxes? Closed
cabinets? Poly bags? A mixture?
Thanks in advance for your comments. I look forward to hearing from you.
