Subj: Update on Midwest Flooding

TO: Members of the Heritage Emergency National Task Force
Staff at Heritage Preservation has compiled reports of damage resulting from
the tornadoes and serious flooding in Midwestern states. A summary of
reports to date is attached. The information is incomplete, since the flooding
continues to threaten many areas. As of this writing, the Iowa State Historic
Preservation Office in Des Moines is closed for mandatory evacuations.
We want to remind you of the many resources available through the Heritage
Emergency National Task Force to help your member institutions, constituents,
and the general public recover from flooding. Please share them:
    * Disaster resources for libraries, archives, museums, and historic
sites and districts are available at
_www.heritagepreservation.org/programs/TFHurricanePub.htm_
(http://www.heritagepreservation.org/programs/TFHurricanePub.htm) .
    * An assessment form, supply lists, and other tools from the Field
Guide to Emergency Response can be downloaded at
_www.heritagepreservation.org/pubs/fgforms.htm_ (http://www.heritagepreservation.org/pubs/fgforms.htm) .
    * The American Institute for Conservation of Historic & Artistic Works
maintains a force of 64 “rapid responders” trained to assess damage and
initiate salvage of cultural collections after a disaster has occurred. Cultural
institutions needing assistance should contact the AIC office at
202-452-9545 for a referral.
    * Many regional conservation centers offer free telephone advice and
other services. Contact the Regional Alliance for Preservation at
1-800-843-8492.
    * “Save Your Treasures the Right Way“ provides simple guidelines for
the public to help them salvage family photographs and other heirlooms. A
copy is attached. Find other resources for the public at
_www.heritagepreservation.org/programs/TFHurricanePub.htm_
(http://www.heritagepreservation.org/programs/TFHurricanePub.htm) .
Last – but not least – please keep in mind the importance of coordinating
any response efforts through appropriate state agencies. A preliminary list of
state contacts is attached and will be posted on our Web site next week. We
will include the location of FEMA Joint Field Offices as they become
available.
If you have reports of damage or response efforts, please forward them to
_taskforce at heritagepreservation.org_ (mailto:taskforce at heritagepreservation.org)
. We will continue to monitor selected Web sites, and send another update
next week. If a conference call is necessary for the exchange of information,
we will host it.
Please keep us posted, and thanks to all who have provided updates.
