A question for all you fish folks (and maybe others) out there. We have just been informed by our Animal Care folks that immersion of specimens in 10% formaldehyde to euthanize them is no longer deemed acceptable by the American Veterinary and Medical Association (AVMA) as outlined in the Guidelines on Euthenasia - even though it is deemed acceptable by ASIH (Guidelines for the use of fishes in Research) and others e.g. American Institute of Fishery Research Biologists (AIFRB).
What I would like to know is:
Have any of you had any similar such problems?
Do you use anything other than formaldehyde to euthanize specimens?
I would be interested in hearing any views (preferably off list please).
Thanks
Andy
