Get Prepared with MayDay 2011!

Cultural institutions take simple steps to prepare for emergencies

Join libraries, museums, archives, and arts and historic preservation
organizations across the nation in setting aside May 1, 2011, to participate
in _MayDay_
(http://heritagepreservation.us1.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=00cbcc194404641e545c4b972&id=b4968ae4d2&e=2209f40f73) , a national effort to
prepare for disasters. Sponsored by Heritage Preservation and other
members of the Heritage Emergency National Task Force, MayDay encourages
organizations to take one simple step to protect the art, artifacts, records, and
historic sites they hold in trust.

Any organization can participate in MayDay. Last year, staff at Lycoming
College’s Snowden Library in Williamsport, PA, invited the college’s
Director of Safety and Security to talk to staff about fire safety, the North
Carolina State Archives took staff on a walk-through of their vaults while
reviewing emergency response procedures, and the Jewish Historical Society of
the Upper Midwest in Minneapolis, MN, created a special page on their Web
site for staff use in case of an emergency.

and publications sale, and customized versions of the MayDay logo for
publicizing this national event.

Enter the 2011 Prize Drawing! Heritage Preservation is collecting
examples of creative but practical preparedness measures to share online. Any
cultural institution submitting a brief description of 2011 MayDay plans or
accomplishments by May 23, 2011, will be entered in a drawing for disaster
supplies donated by Gaylord Brothers. _Click here_

The hierarchy and decision-making processes that serve us well during
normal times often collapse under the stress of a disaster. The Incident
Command System serves as a temporary, super-charged management structure during
times of stress. Implementing the Incident Command System at the
Institutional Level is the first book written to show cultural repositories how to
use the Incident Command System internally to protect collections, staff,
and visitors during times of stress.

Archivists, librarians, museum professionals, and emergency managers have
praised Implementing the Incident Command System at the Institutional
Level as a readable, easy-to-understand introduction to ICS. To learn more
about the book, download sample pages, order online, or submit a purchase

_____________

The Society of American Archivists (SAA) created the MayDay initiative in
2006 and promoted the idea to its members and allied organizations. The
following year, the Heritage Emergency National Task Force and SAA expanded
the concept to include all kinds of collecting institutions and historic
preservation interests. _www.archivists.org_
