Lead Fossil Preparator

The Department of PaleoServices at the San Diego Natural History Museum has an opening for a Lead Fossil Preparator. This position is full time with benefits, and begins in July 2012. The Lead Fossil Preparator will be responsible for overseeing and conducting all laboratory based preparation of fossil remains. Work responsibilities will include preparation and assessment of vertebrate, invertebrate, and botanical fossil remains and traces; supervision and training of volunteers in the fossil preparation laboratory; occasional supervision of field personnel in the fossil preparation laboratory; maintenance and care of all laboratory equipment; examination and evaluation of collected fossil material for stratigraphic contamination; development and management of fossil preparation budgets; assistance in transportation of large specimens throughout the department; and aid in field salvage of specimens. Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs.

Requirements: The successful candidate must possess at least a B.S. in geology or a related discipline with an emphasis in paleontology (M.S. preferred); have a minimum of one year experience in fossil preparation; demonstrated knowledge of and competence with relevant mechanical instruments, adhesives, and consolidants; proven organizational ability; and a track record of attention to detail.
