Senior Vice President, Science and Conservation

 

Missouri Botanical Garden, founded in 1859, is a center of botanical
research and science education, as well as an oasis in the city of St.
Louis. The Garden seeks to "preserve and enrich life" by illuminating
the importance of plants to the balance of life on Earth. Our visitors
discover a heightened appreciation and understanding of the world's rich
botanical heritage and learn, beyond the floral exhibits, there exists
another realm: our internationally renowned science and conservation
program.

 

With scientists on six continents in 35 countries around the globe, the
Missouri Botanical Garden is one of the three largest plant science
programs in the world. Today, there are over 50 Ph.D. Scientists
employed by the Garden. Our Scientists conduct the essential work of
plant identification, classification and conservation in remote, rugged
locations throughout the world.

 

While the Missouri Botanical Garden conducts science and conservation
operations around the globe, its headquarters in St. Louis offers
tremendous resources as a hub of plant science. The Garden maintains one
of the world's largest herbaria, currently numbering 6.3 million
specimens and one of the world's best botanical libraries.

 

Summary of the position:

 

The Senior Vice President of Science and Conservation is responsible for
providing Science leadership in support of the Garden across multiple
domestic and international locations. Responsible for leading the
definition, development, and implementation of the Garden's scientific
and conservation strategy and business plans to support the Garden's
strategic plan. This role ensures that science and conservation
initiatives function proactively to support the organization to achieve
its objectives. Leads, develops and motivates an effective and
professional research team. The Senior Vice President promotes the
Garden's role in science and conservation to internal and external
global audiences.

 

Qualifications and/or Experience:

 

PhD Botany, Biology or related field required.

Documented scientific record with a minimum of ten (10+) years
scientific leadership experience and publication record.

Demonstrated abilities in successful grant writing, fundraising,
negotiating and managing budgets, and advanced understanding of
financial operations.

Minimum ten (10+) years relevant and increasingly responsible management
responsibilities at an executive level, and with a proven track record
in strategic business planning.

Prior experience working in a non-profit or research and learning
environment desired.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

 

Directly and indirectly manages a team of 115 staff and scientific
managers.
