[Nhcoll-l] replacing cabinet gaskets

Based on correspondence with Gretchen Anderson this summer (thanks, Gretchen!), our student workers replaced old foam gaskets on two Lane cabinets successfully using P profile silicone gaskets. There is no problem with doors closing and it looks like a good seal.

One of them, Stephen Perkins, is working up 2 page “how-to” manual based on this work. He’s not done yet, but below is the info on where they obtained the material. Silicone is inert so it is archival quality so the main issue is to make sure you use an archival quality adhesive. If you want the details and photos, please contact me directly (cahaas at vt.edu) and Stephen or I can send you his document.
"After searching online, we found Trademark Hardware (http://www.tmhardware.com). They sell different type of gasket material. Gretchen Anderson at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History recommended to us either a D or P profile. We decided on a P profile material (Adhesive Weatherstrip, ½” wide SiliconSeal™ Bulb). We called the company and requested the product without the self-adhesive. Rachel Rosenberg (Rachel at tmsoundproofing.com) handled our special request and was able to ship the product as we requested.

To adhere the gasket material to the Lane cabinets, we used 3M Scotch adhesive transfer tape 969—an acid-free double sided tape. While it immediately bonds well to the metal, we found the adhesion between the silicon and transfer tape to be strongest after letting it sit for a while."

It comes in different profiles (P, D, O, Flat, ribbed), and it holds up well. You might be able to find some at a hardware store - it is not unlike some weather stripping. You need to check the material, as well as the sticky back. You want to use one of the archival double stick adhesives (I have used my own 3M adhesive transfer tape - 369)

Volara is also really good, but I had trouble finding it in anything but large sheets, and adding a self adhesive backing double or tripled the price. The easiest, most cost-effective option, and the one we are going to use, is weather stripping from a hardware store. It comes in several widths and thicknesses and is easily installed. The only problem is that it likely won't be archival quality. If that's something you are concerned about, I would look into Volara. If you contact me off list I can give you a little more info.

> The Anthropology collection at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History will be closed to research completely for approximately two years, beginning summer 2015. While this is a long time, it is for a very good reason. We have been awarded an NEH grant that will be used to install compactor storage in the Archaeological collection area. This is a huge step in ensuring the preservation and accessibility of the collection. If anyone would like access prior to June 2015, please contact me. I will do my best to arrange that for you.
