[Nhcoll-l] borosilicate glass

Hi Yves,
Dixon glass sells similar jars, but they are also very tight closing.
Your colleagues in Tervuren have a brilliant and very simple tool to
open this type of ground stoppers by using simple flattened wooden
strips and lifting the lids from the rim of the specimen jar. Works
perfectly fine (but only with stoppers that have a notch at the base of
the handle serving as counter bearing for the wooden levers; use stable
oak or beech wood for the wooden levers).
Alternatively, you could use a non-silicon vacuum grease (e.g. Alsirol -
distributed in some countries by VWR international) to prevent the
stopper to get caught in the neck of the specimen jar.
Third option: try to close the specimens jar after initial filling
inside your (cooler and nice) storage rooms rather then downstairs in
the lab. This avoids underpressure when the fluid cools down in the
storage room.
All the best
Dirk
