Here at the KU Biodiversity Institute we have two of the Chart MVE 1894R-150 liquid nitrogen dewars in our Genetic Resources facility. We do not have a microbulk system and so have liquid nitrogen delivered once a week by Matheson Gas in Topeka. We receive two 22 PSI 240 liter tanks (one for each dewar) every week and always have 4 tanks on site (one connected to each dewar and one spare and switch out empties for fulls. We generally do not use enough liquid nitrogen to have a delivery every week and so work on a three weeks on and one week off schedule to keep pace. The TEC 3000 display keeps track of our liquid nitrogen usage and we have the data downloaded periodically so that we can see every event logged in an Excel spreadsheet.

So, in general we go through one tank in just over a week for each dewar. >From the Excel spreadsheet data this equates to about 0.2-0.3 inches per day of a total of 8-10 inches of LN2 at the bottom of the dewar. We have all four “zones” of each dewar – high temp, low level, high level and battery – hooked up to a TYCO business alarm system with a call tree containing 6 people who will be called in order if an alarm event were to occur. We have seen a marked reduction in alarm events as opposed to our old -80°C freezers that would go off all the time.

I have attached specs for dewars and TEC 3000 for those interested. Happy to answer any other questions.

Andy

Subject: [Nhcoll-l] Vapor-phase nitrogen freezers

Hello,
I am looking for information on nitrogen usage and general pros and cons of Chart MVE vs Taylor Wharton Labs series vapor phase nitrogen freezers. I know that Chart seems to be the industry standard, but I'd like to get an idea from users as to what the nitrogen consumption actually is with fill losses, to compare with claims by other manufacturers. We are looking at purchasing the larger 1894R series tanks, but any info on any of their products would be much appreciated.

Also, does anyone have recommendations on good freezer monitoring and alarm systems?
Thanks!
