BCoN Establishes Working Group: Collections Communications

The Biodiversity Collections Network is pleased to announce the establishment of a Working Group on Collections Communications. This group will continue the discussions begun during our successful workshop last September. Request for Nominations/Applications: Next Generation Research Uses of Digitized Collections, Data

BCoN would like to establish a Working Group to consider the opportunities, needs, and limitations to research uses of digitized specimens and their associated data.

Among the issues this Working Group will consider are:

  *   What are the current limitations to the use of collections-based data?
  *   What do other research communities need in order to more fully use collections data for their research?
  *   What research communities, beyond systematics, are using digitized collections data, and how?
  *   What community practices or national efforts are needed to expand the use of these data for biodiversity research and for use by new research communities?
This group will also be asked to offer recommendations and guidance for a future workshop that will explore these and related questions.

We hope to have this Working Group established by the end of May. We strongly encourage individuals who have used collections data in novel ways to apply for this Working Group.

BCoN, NSC Alliance, Cal Academy Partner to Gather Data

The California Academy of Sciences, Natural Science Collections Alliance and BCoN have teamed to develop a survey that will gather information about the status and trends of research collections in natural history museums, botanical gardens, and other natural science collection facilities. The survey will for the first time this century provide a baseline of data that the natural science collections community can use to inform decision-making about the use of collections for research, to inform solutions to important societal problems, and to understand how institutions are/are not investing in their own research collections and staff.

The survey instrument is nearing completion and will be disseminated to curators, research directors and museum directors in the near future.
