Dear NHCOLL-L members,
My name is Patrick Randall, and I am Community Manager for a U.S. federal grant called Expanding Access to Biodiversity Literature<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__biodivlib.wikispaces.com_Expanding-2BAccess-2Bto-2BBiodiversity-2BLiterature&d=CwMFaQ&c=WO-RGvefibhHBZq3fL85hQ&r=R1iB40lWbn_pFz-bJ7AxD6I_c9TR1N39WjHhmUsc2Q4&m=MEbBohsVK6J40LjpRlTKtC4a6bhzD1JpHVfjsgGMJ8Y&s=V5UzejleYFJW9VlUv6ojPc5Qvm66KD4mqrwoAl4seJw&e=>. The aim of this grant is to enhance the collection of the Biodiversity Heritage Library <https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__biodiversitylibrary.org_&d=CwMFaQ&c=WO-RGvefibhHBZq3fL85hQ&r=R1iB40lWbn_pFz-bJ7AxD6I_c9TR1N39WjHhmUsc2Q4&m=MEbBohsVK6J40LjpRlTKtC4a6bhzD1JpHVfjsgGMJ8Y&s=XkIHk2l1uGfyRfi1AKoi0vYLUscWaCOkSjN86d58X88&e=> (BHL) through the addition of unique and valuable content.
BHL is a consortium of major natural history museum libraries, botanical libraries, and research institutions that cooperate to digitize and make accessible the legacy biodiversity literature. Together, the consortium accounts for over two million volumes of biodiversity literature collected over 200 years. Open access to the resources in the Biodiversity Heritage Library supports the work of scientists, researchers, and students in their home institutions and throughout the world.
We are currently looking for U.S. institutions with books, manuscripts, field books, and other materials that fall within the scope<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__biodivlib.wikispaces.com_Collection-2BDevelopment-2BPolicy&d=CwIGaQ&c=-dg2m7zWuuDZ0MUcV7Sdqw&r=CLFZJ3fvGSmDp7xK1dNZfh6uGV_h-8NVlo3fXNoRNzI&m=UlmqiyOR5Iu0p0LMS4aL_rV6QiADiVPjBLp5CDkRJfc&s=YVPwCIQwfCh5h826coi8_GlEYrlrXJroqM6ZZNFA2ng&e= > of BHL and are missing from its digital collections. We are interested in items that have already been digitized as well as those that have not; for the latter category, we have funding in the amount of $750 (with the possibility of more) to cover shipping and scanning by the Internet Archive, at the rate of $3 per item plus 10 cents per page. All scanning products (including high-res JP2s, tiffs, PDFs, and text files) are freely available to content providers for use on their own websites.
If you are interested in having your institution’s material represented in BHL, and you would like to take advantage of our digitization funding, please fill out the survey below. Don’t hesitate to contact me with questions about BHL, the grant, or anything else. I look forward to hearing from you.
