[Nhcoll-l] Urgent: University of Louisiana at Monroe Museum of Natural History facing imminent divestment or destruction

This is one of the initiatives that GRBio is perfectly poised to tackle but it will only work if these small, regional, imperiled museums register their museums with the site so that they have a presence. Unfortunately this museum is a poster child for the reasoning behind such decisions. If you take a look at their website, there is no mention of research or collections and their data is not available online or in any of the aggregators except for their herpetology collection as far as I can tell. This puts them at a huge disadvantage when it comes to advocacy and showing use of the collections by the worldwide research community.

If your museum is not already listed in GRBio I would urge you to make the effort to get it registered as a first step to getting recognized as part of a global collections network.

This is a great idea. We already have an online database of herbaria (Index Herbariorum) which is currently undergoing a major update thanks to NSF funding. As a result, these data are more up to date than those in iDigBio or GRBio, but we are more than happy to share updates as a data extract or through our new API.

I could produce a list of herbaria that are potentially at risk, based on lack of staff, failure to respond to requests for updates, etc.

Great idea Chris.
This also happened with the Paleo collections at Princeton & Yale Peabody stepped up and sent a team to pack & transfer them. Also the insect collections at Indiana (so they could expand the sex institute there) and Yale also went to get them before the dumpster, etc., etc.

Hi All,
I've been thinking about this ever-growing problem for a while, as now and again you hear of orphaned/abandoned collections.

What do people think of creating some kind of task force to come up with a list of the collections in the U.S. (iDigBio probably has most of these collections listed already) and reach out to them before things reach a crisis point? We could provide 'emergency' contact info for other institutions who would be willing to take the material. It may even serve to show the administration of the institutions that other places value the material and give them incentive to preserve them.

Just a thought.
Chris

FYI: I'm not affiliated in any way with ULM, I posted about this because it needs broader attention, immediately, and to see if anyone has ideas as to how the museum community might put pressure on the admins of ULM to re-think this terrible ultimatum.

Peace,
