[Nhcoll-l] 3-D Scanner Suggestions

Hello Casey,

I took a 3D scanning workshop two or three years ago now so things might have changed but there were a couple options at that time in that price range. The first used an XBOX Connect unit and (free?) software to scan objects. The results were pretty decent for the price point. XBOX 360 units scanned in standard definition while the XBOX One units scanning in high definition. The units are not overly expensive and you can probably find one used for even cheaper at a video game store or pawn shop. The second option used an off-the-shelf digital camera or cellphone camera. Photos were taken from a variety of angles and the software, which I believe was free, stitched them together. The results depended on the quality of the camera but even a cellphone produced decent results. My apologies as I cannot remember the names of the software but some Google-fu might reveal the answer. I believe one program was titled Rhino, but that might have been for a different application.

While I cannot comment on how well these will work for your particular specimens and the application you intend it could be something to check into. The quality does not compare to that of the $25,000-$100,000 scanners but the cost is significantly less. Hopefully this gives you something to work with.

Does anyone have recommendations for an affordable (<$1000), portable 3-D scanner for specimen scanning?

Thanks,
