Hi Casey,

it'd be useful to know what kind of 3D scanning you want to do. If it needs
to be calibrated for morphometric research then you'd need a different type
to one mainly intended for accurate colour reproduction. If you're after
something that can do both then I think you will struggle for that budget.

If you just want a basic set up for public engagement use and to get
familiar with 3D issues relating to 3D (like subsequent file management)
then you can do it with photogrammetry using a decent camera to get
multiple images and software like Autodesk ReCap / ReCap Pro to create the
model. The Horniman Museum used this approach for their specimens (
