Hello Jim,

For the collections storage areas you could try a product similar to the one being sold here: https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.blackoutblinds.ca_&d=DwIGaQ&c=cjytLXgP8ixuoHflwc-poQ&r=LpYc_Z_iN1KRw0hheb3x6-8MJUMu482qfHowpGYJqwc&m=qqPnaYvGjr-mjVKtotOEb7uIBloUngYdSs4NWExXfnY&s=G7ObtRwDd5TwrwHI_pckDFxPBFa4SAq2fAQo16dxtHU&e=. You measure your window sizes and they send you precut blackout material that will Velcro to the frame of the window. Relatively cheap, zero light gets through from what I can see, and very reversible. We’ve looked at them for a couple different applications but haven’t had a chance to utilise them yet. You could likely do something DIY with similar results.

For the work areas, I worked in a conservation lab that had large windows on two sides. What they had done was install a dot pattern on the windows that blocked probably 25-50% of the light coming through but wasn’t visible to the eye and blinds as well for when staff weren’t present. I believe there was also a UV film on the windows but I could be mistaken.

Subject: [Nhcoll-l] Advice for reducing/blocking UV/lux/heat

I’m posting this for a Dear colleague.

I am researching ways to reduce and/or completely block UV/Lux/heat coming in through windows in a historic building. So far, UV films seem to be a popular method but I wanted to see if anyone has recommendations for resources or methods that have worked (references/studies, brands that have worked well, other materials, combinations of materials, etc.).

The windows are in areas that are currently being utilized as lab/work spaces or collections storage. For the lab windows, I am thinking of reducing the issues using UV film and blinds. However, for the storage areas, I hope to completely black out the windows in a way that is fairly permanent/low maintenance (lasting more than 10 years) but potentially reversible (not filling the windows in with brick and mortar or concrete). Any insights/suggestions would be very much appreciated, especially for the storage area windows.

Thank you in advance for the assistance!,

Mahalo,
