Dear HENTF members,

Today marks the official start of the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season, which will run through November 30. We've already seen hurricane activity in the eastern Pacific: Hurricane Agatha made history as the strongest hurricane ever recorded to come ashore in May.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts an above-normal 2022 Atlantic hurricane season, which would make it the seventh consecutive above-average hurricane season. NOAA predicts a 65% chance of an above-normal season, a 25% chance of a near-normal season, and a 10% chance of a below-normal season. The increased activity anticipated this hurricane season is attributed to several climate factors, including the ongoing La Niña and warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures in the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea.

What does this mean to you as a HENTF member? It means, first, that we need to practice what we preach. Make sure that you and your loved ones are prepared. Know your hurricane risk, make an emergency plan, know your evacuation route, review and safeguard important documents. For more information, visit Hurricanes | Ready.gov<https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ready.gov%2Fhurricanes&data=05%7C01%7CPalmerL%40si.edu%7Ca85b70d6b77e425161fe08da43d377e9%7C989b5e2a14e44efe93b78cdd5fc5d11c%7C0%7C0%7C637896872800595672%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=w9UxJVnhg8yiVB7SmP1bQ0nLwHCSqbQEHjGdjbSu8Oc%3D&reserved=0>.

I ask that you be prepared to help disseminate HENTF preparedness information when a hurricane threat arises, and that you reach out to your members and constituents after a hurricane - or after any other event - to ascertain the safety of staff and the status of facilities and collections. NOAA predicts 3 to 6 major hurricanes (category 3, 4 or 5; with winds of 111 mph or higher). But it only takes one to change a community forever.

Is your name among this year's Atlantic tropical cyclone names? Hurricane Ida was so destructive that the World Meteorological Organization has removed it from the list of Atlantic Hurricane names.

Thanks for all that you do to help protect our nation's cultural heritage.

Warmest regards,
Lori
