Writing for Impact and Influence: An AIBS Professional Development Program

The American Institute of Biological Sciences (AIBS) has heard a common refrain from faculty, scientists, government and private sector executives, and everyone in between: Scientists are increasingly responsible for public engagement and business writing, yet they are rarely given the tools they need to succeed.

AIBS is responding by re-offering our professional development program designed to help scientists, including graduate students, hone their written communication skills to increase the impact and influence of their message. This course complements AIBS's highly successful Communications Boot Camp for Scientists, which focuses on oral communication.
Writing for Impact and Influence provides practical instruction and hands-on exercises that will improve the participant's general writing proficiency. The program will provide participants with the skills and tools needed to compose scientific press releases, blog posts, memoranda, and more, with a focus on the reader experience.

Who Should Take the Course?
· Individuals interested in furthering their professional development by augmenting their writing skills.
· Graduate students and early-career professionals interested in increasing their marketability to employers.

Creating Virtual Learning Opportunities in Museums online course begins July 4 on MuseumStudy.com
One thing being forced to shut down has taught us is that whatever new normal we find it will include virtual programs and learning. That is why we have put together this course.
Creating Virtual Learning Opportunities in Museums will cover creating both synchronous and asynchronous programs, connecting with teachers, and some technical skills to ensure that you can support teachers and students virtually as they learn from you and your museum. By the end of the course, participants will have built several different virtual education programs that will be ready to use.
With the guidance of Instructor Hillary Hanel Rose participants will create at least 3 different virtual museum education programs and learn to use technology tools and build skills to help them develop additional virtual learning opportunities.

Integrated Pest Management: The Plan and Implementation online course begins July 4 on MuseumStudy.com
So you are familiar with Integrated Pest Management, but you never got around to writing a plan to carry it out. Here is the course for you!
A written plan formalizes the IPM strategy and keeps management abreast of your status. It organizes your ideas and lays the groundwork for the needs of the collection and the building(s). It provides the direction in which you want to take the program, including grant funding and accreditation.
Join Carnegie Museum of Natural History Conservator Gretchen Anderson for this four week online course in which participants will learn how to apply IPM principles to their specific situation and institution. A draft plan and specific implementation strategies will be developed and discussed. Even though our institutions have different challenges the exchange of ideas presents the opportunity for us to help each other brainstorm solutions that will work for our situation.

Policies for Managing Collections 4 week online course begins July 4 on MuseumStudy.comJoin instructor John Simmons author of Things Great and Small: Collections Management Policies for the course Policies for Managing Collections. Participants in the course can purchase the Second Edition of the book at a discount. In this course we will critically examine the purposes and functions of collections management policies, including how collections are defined, acquired, managed, used, maintained, and deaccessioned.

Did you know that John Simmons has also developed a free board game as a compliment to Things Great and Small: Collections Management Policies? It is called Monopolicy the Collections Management Policy Game. You can read more about it and download it from our website. https://www.museumstudy.com/monopolicy
