[Nhcoll-l] 35mm slides

Hi Tonya,
Seconding Gretchen’s recommendation to lean on the Image Permanence Institute’s resources! I found this publication “IPI Storage Guide for Acetate Film<https://s3.cad.rit.edu/ipi-assets/publications/msqr.pdf>” that may help; page 4 goes into proper storage techniques for acetate and polyester base film.
Here at BRIT Library, we unfortunately don’t have cold storage for our film, but we keep our collection between 68-72°F and a relative humidity between 40-50%. I store slides either in these modular slide box kits<https://www.gaylord.com/Preservation/Photo%2C-Print-%26-Art-Preservation/Storage-Boxes/Gaylord-Archival%26%23174%3B-Modular-Slide-File-Storage-System-Kit/p/SFS11153X6B> (which are flat boxes comprised of 6 “saltine” boxes within them where the slides can be rehoused) or in archival sleeves<https://www.gaylord.com/Preservation/Photo%2C-Print-%26-Art-Preservation/Albums-%26-Scrapbooks/Pages%2C-Sleeves-%26-Supplies/Print-File%26%23174%3B-4-mil-Polypropylene-35mm-Slide-Pages-with-Date-%26-Subject-Blocks-%28100-Pack%29/p/3520P>. Gaylord also has rehousing materials for cold storage<https://www.gaylord.com/Preservation/Photo%2C-Print-%26-Art-Preservation/Kits/Gaylord-Archival%26%23174%3B-Photo-%26-Negative-Cold-Storage-Kit/p/PNCSKIT>.
I hope this helps!

Hi Tonya,
One of the best resources for the care and storage of slides ( and other physical media) is IPI (Image Permanence institute). They have an excellent website and lots of resources for just this kind of question.
Gretchen Anderson.

Hi Tonya
We had some 35mm slides with plastic frames and we removed the frames because the plastic used these times can be harmful for the film.
Also the frame deforms the film inside. We keep them inside PP or PE plastic sheets. This way it takes a lot fewer space and the photos are easier to inspect.
The black&white are ok to keep on room temperature but colored ones are better to keep in colder conditions (10-12 Celsius and RH40-45%.)
Best!

Hello all,
I wonder if any of you would be willing to share the way that you store any 35mm slides you have in your collections? We have a few boxes that we have refrigerated, but I’m not sure if that’s best practice of if I would be better to have them someplace that’s just cool and dry.
Thanks!
Tonya
