[Nhcoll-l] Bone replica IDs

Dear colleagues,

we recently started experimenting with 3D prints of animal bones to duplicate specimens of our zoological reference collection. The aim is to have various copies of selected bones for our own use at different locations, as well as making them available for loan to other institutions, which makes labelling absolutely necessary. We have agreed to use our institution abbreviation and the original specimen ID, followed by consecutive letters in case we print more than one copy of the same bone. In our database (DiversityWorkbench), we can add these replicas as new specimen parts to the original specimen.
The abbreviation for our collection changed in 2021 from SAPM to SPM due to its separation from the anthropological collection, but specimen IDs remained the same, e.g. SAPM-07020. My question for you is, should we use these IDs on our newly printed bone replicas or the new abbreviation? In either case, it would not pose a problem for finding the specimen in our database, as we can simply look for 07020 and it will pop up. Furthermore, it is still possible to draw the connection to our institution when googling SAPM, so anyone who finds a strange "bone" in their collection would be able to get in contact with us. On the other hand, as some bones are super small, it would be helpful if we printed less letters onto the replicas...

I'm very grateful for any advice. Thanks a lot in advance!

All the best,
Melanie
