[Nhcoll-l] [EXTERN] Bone replica IDs

Dear Melanie,
my advice would be to use the new abbreviation SPM, as the 3D-prints are new objects that should be referenced with the original object, but are not the same as the original object. From this perspective, it might even be useful to avoid use of SAPM.
Because the 3Dreplicas are an entire new sub-collection at SPM and knowing the collection personally very well, you could also consider a modified numbering that can be fitted more easily on the (small objects). Different inventory numbers for different sub-collections are not uncommon, e.g. style and encoding for tissue collections usually is different from that of objects in the main collection.
You could for example also consider to introduce a stable syntax that combines letters and numbers, e.g. SPM-XY-000, where you could use the letters to encode specific projects or bone elements.
Hope this helps

Dear colleagues,
we recently started experimenting with 3D prints of animal bones to duplicate specimens of our zoological reference collection. The aim is to have various copies of selected bones for our own use at different locations, as well as making them available for loan to other institutions, which makes labelling absolutely necessary. We have agreed to use our institution abbreviation and the original specimen ID, followed by consecutive letters in case we print more than one copy of the same bone. In our database (DiversityWorkbench), we can add these replicas as new specimen parts to the original specimen.
The abbreviation for our collection changed in 2021 from SAPM to SPM due to its separation from the anthropological collection, but specimen IDs remained the same, e.g. SAPM-07020. My question for you is, should we use these IDs on our newly printed bone replicas or the new abbreviation? In either case, it would not pose a problem for finding the specimen in our database, as we can simply look for 07020 and it will pop up. Furthermore, it is still possible to draw the connection to our institution when googling SAPM, so anyone who finds a strange "bone" in their collection would be able to get in contact with us. On the other hand, as some bones are super small, it would be helpful if we printed less letters onto the replicas...
I'm very grateful for any advice. Thanks a lot in advance!
All the best,
Melanie
