[Nhcoll-l] Antw: LED lights in collections

Hi Angela,
normal white LED lamps emit a relatively high proportion of UV light. This is known to be very damaging for collection items. However, there are explicitly UV-free lamps. Make sure that these are used.
A major problem is that there are many luminaires in which the LED bulbs are permanently installed. If the bulb breaks, the entire device must be replaced. However, it is often the case that the manufacturer no longer exists after a few years. This is a particular problem with museum collections, as they are intended to last for a long time without constant building work. Be aware that the lamps can be replaced separately.
Good luck
Joachim

Hi everyone,
Our campus facilities management would like to change all of our general lighting in non-public collections spaces (dry and wet) to LEDs. I haven't found any sources suggesting major negatives (e.g., https://www.nps.gov/museum/publications/mhi/chap4.pdf).
Does anyone have experience with the change to LEDs, particularly any unanticipated effects?
Thanks,
Angela
